Historically due to animals living on mud room floors with people causing disease base layer stone floors were created with holes for animals to build nests as to keep them away from living quarters or stables whilst also keeping the homes risen above the earth to ensure they did not flood or become accustomed to landslides due to uneven stone placement which was further supported by the straw animals gathered and placed between.
