Description It was announced the other day that NCSoft was closing down City of Heroes - not because it wasn't performing - because the company wanted to move 'in a different direction'.

I drew this picture to try to convey my feelings.

The game... IS old... the graphics engine sucks... it crashes... the characters are really low poly... they don't even have individual digits on their hands... the SG bases crash my computer... but... even with all that, the game did something that no other MMO lets you.

It put /you/ in the driver seat of the creativity. Want an Arcane Warlock? No problem? Futuristic Ship Enginner? You bet. Hard-boiled Detective? Got room for that too. You could build your own bases, create your own missions. Your experiences were only limited by your creativity, and that's not even talking about the /community/.

RPers - people who like to /envision/ themselves in the roles of their characters - are rarely seen, or even welcomed in other MMOs... but in City of Heroes... they were embraced. Welcomed. Defended.

I'm ranting. It's a great shame NCSoft has done this.

In future, I've decided to 'go in a different direction' as well, NCSoft. Far, far away from any of your games. Sure... maybe GW2 is a good game... but if you're just going to pull the plug on it down the road... then I'm not giving you a cent for it now.

Sorry if I was down.

City of Heroes will be missed.

It's indeed very appropiate...

But we haven't all lost hope, the Titan Network (the people behind the wiki and Mids) is starting an initiative to save the game. Start here if you would like to lend a hand: [link]

You might also want to sign the petition: [link]

We are not giving up without a fight!

I just want to say again: Thanks for all the replies. It's hit a lot of us hard. And... the image can be painful.

I'm glad to hear from everyone who has commented. Thanks for it. That... this 'community' is part of what made City of Heroes unique among MMOs.

Thank you all very much.

This is how I feel too, in a nutshell. This was never just a game. It was a game where imagination ran free. I could BE anything. Anything. Alien, robot, mage, confused kid with powers, mutant gangbanger, amoral soldier. I helped to shut own a death god. I fought off multiple alien invasions. I crammed the undead back into their graves.

I got into the characters head. They got into mine. Trying to figure how they worked, why they threw themselves at their enemies. What drives them. It was never about how strong I was. That came later, always later. It was about my concept. Mine. Not faceless orc, not random soldier of a human empire. I was the tiny alien inside the mech, fighting back the aliens. I was the crazed fairy that unlocked the lost magic. I was the guilt ridden ex-officer of a tyrant who lied. I was the street thug who scraped his life from the street, lighting anything on fire in his way. Some people think that CoH wasn't a great Superhero game. Not for me. CO feels flat, borrowed and chaotic. Some people might like that. DCOU feels flat, constrictive, and strange. I may wander to one of the games, I may have no choice. My choice is CoH. Always had been. Wow. Rant. I'd sorry, but I'm not.

I agree with your rant.

There /isn't/ an alternative game. If they shut down WoW I could play GW2, or Aion, or Lineage 2, or Everquest 2, or Star Wars, or CO... but... no other game offers what CoH does.

Really liked your reply. Thanks for posting it.

I love this game, so so much. My friends and I are enjoying GW2 (we'd all pre-purchased it), but even while we're playing, we're lamenting City of Heroes' destruction. It honestly breaks my heart.

I 'd this on both this account, and my gamer (CoH mainly) account . Thank you for it.

I was completely surprised to read the announcement that the game is being shut down. I had been playing off and on for the past 4 years, but in the end, I find that it is the friendships I have made that I value more than the game. The game may die, but these bonds are still strong.

I agree so hard. And you can tell by the wording of the announcement that the Paragon Studios people didn't find out about it until just before we did.

CoH was my first MMO and I made a lot of friends in that game. I'm going to play it until it goes down, and then NCSoft isn't getting my patronage again. The base company clearly is out of touch with its subscribers.

I was always so proud being a part of CoH cause like you said, it was different that those other games. Community was so cool to be a part of. Enjoyed every minute of the whole 8 years I was there. My heart goes out to the tireless people at Paragon Studios. Many thanks to you and good luck, we all deserved much better than NCSoft gave us.

I was thoroughly disgusted to read this yesterday. I have been playing off and on for a few years now, and was more than a little hurt that NCSoft just dropped its players liek they dont matter. Thats what hurt the most. Ive made IRL friends through CoH/CoV that are very precious to me. I for the life of me cannot imagine WHY they thought this was a good idea. Ill tell you what though. I agree with several people concerning the other NCSoft games. I feel like Im being pushed to play them, and Im finding a little less than stellar. So it looks like Ive made my last payment to NCSoft... *sad panda*

What kills me is initally City of heroes is unique compared to lineage, guildwars and Aion.. There basically the same genera of fantasy like WOW, DnD and so many others Done again and again and again there spitting out those games faster and faster but there ALL THE SAME. Fight ogres, dragons BLAH.
Couldnt even get through the first chapter of Diablo 3 I got so bored with it .. WoW only lasted 3 weeks of boredom canciled before the free month was over. even tried the first Guildwars. 2 weeks and I realized the massively waste of money it was.
I played COH since the orignal beta. Its the first game that fit me even after a while felt like home. NC Soft enjoy the competiton And I hope your financial loss is biblical.
Also hope perhaps Paragon studeos can some how pull together and maybe create another game with the same level of charm and community that COH has.

i agree with you..... i hope that somehow Paragon Studios can be saved and CoH can continue.... i was playing last night and i suddenly got deeply saddened because very soon i wouldn't be able to play with any of my characters or interact with the community......

Yes that's sad... in fact they just launched GW2 and it appeared that they need more server than expected... a few days after they announce that they stop CoV/CoH, wonder if it's linked :/

Glad you're back in action, bud! I've never tried any of these games yet, but I might in the future. I've heard of City of Heroes, but never researched into it, and from your explanation it seems the type of game in which you can be the most liberal in your creation, moreso than DC Universe Online.

TheMikko In reply to Hellsender [2012-09-02 06:49:53 +0000 UTC]

Yes, DCUO is far more strict about options, somewhat like NC's own follow-up, Champions Online, which I think it was a step back from COH's excellent customization.

Hybrid2 In reply to TheMikko [2012-09-02 15:09:01 +0000 UTC]

Powers in champions are very limited.and you have to buy every, new costumes set since after a month, into launch.
DCUO just look pretty. no social system at all.cant even talk when you die.cant create channel or talk and play at the same time.no changes since beta.the customization is laughable.powers and look.

TheMikko In reply to Hybrid2 [2012-09-02 15:51:29 +0000 UTC]

Aren't they about to release like the third expansion patch for DCUO? You'd think that would count as something changing. I only ever played it with my bro and the voice chat in a party seemed to work, but then I've never been too big on the social aspects of MMOs. Still think COH was the one of these three I'd first recommend to someone.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I... don't mean to hate on GW2, Aion or Lineage 2... but it feels like NCSoft is pushing me towards them. I just don't know if I can trust a game managed by the company... I'm ranting again.

Thanks for the replies.

RockDeadman In reply to firstedition [2012-09-04 19:48:51 +0000 UTC]

the reason behind NCSoft pulling the plug on CoH is because of a supposed 6 million dollar loss on development costs and marketing for GW II..... also Linage and Aion vastly under performed their sales expediencies...... granted GW II made back 4 million but there is still a 2 million dollar deficit to cover.... Paragon studios and CoH are a subsidiary to NCSoft and they aren't willing to get rid of their own games so they're making them bite the bullet..... it pisses me off to no end because CoH wasn't even part of the problem but they still decided to shut it down......

I thoroughly enjoyed City of Heroes. I had a tech mage that specialized in guns with a base decked out with pointless accessories and was a member of a one-man guild, and it was amazing.

However!

The games mentioned in this picture aren't bad themselves. I've yet to experience any of them, but they certainly don't lack in style, if nothing else.

NCsoft wouldn't have a say in whether GW2 would have it's 'plug' pulled however. A shame to hear about this =/.
