about: match grip is a strange case; they're a sphinx. often thought to be legendary or just an old pony's tale, sphinxes used to hail from southern equestria, around the town of somnambula. match grip was randomly discovered as a foal (cub?) one day in the ruins of an old temple. they often remark that they don't remember anyone ever being a parental figure to them before their discovery. match was perfectly capable of finding their own food (stealing from nearby vendors) and having fun in their house (a very dangerous abandoned temple).

some residents of somnambula allowed them to live in their homes temporarily as a foal, but match grip felt somewhat disconnected from everyone there. they sort of treated them strangely because of their supposed legendary status, and match grip often yearned for someplace a little more... modern. they unearthed a huge passion for contemporary electric instruments, but especially huge, fancy drumkits. after learning of the friendship school in ponyville with nice dorms, an accepting environment, and A Music Program, they quickly migrated there.

after learning of match grip's situation, the mom six invited match to come live with them in the castle, instead of staying in the lonely dorms over the break... and you can guess how that went. they all fell head over heels for this spunky, rebellious little outcast, and eventually offered them a permanent home after just a few weeks.

match grip's temper and defiant nature has milded in their later years, but they are still super punk. they're a drummer in a rock band, too.
