It's not a sad background story because no one is deadBut it's just an overall insight on whats going on in his personal life

Same place,different times, same day, but can't see each other
Q: Can he get back?
A: Yes but he has to figure out which reality they are in.
Remember there are so many routes in one story they can or can't be explored.
More than million possibilities. Keep that in mind.
Q: Sister?
A: She in his current reality and can travel between the two realities but no on will.
It kinda just happens and she could be gone for four days in route A and be gone for 10 minutes in route B
She's able to pass messages between everyone
