Description Costume designs for Tamora from William Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus.
Left: Act I, Scene I
Right: Act II, Scene III

I presented these designs at the district level of the International Thespian Society competition and got straight superiors, and I'm going to present them again at the state competition later this year. So... er... wish me luck!

Tamora is such an interesting character. I wanted there to be some parallels between her and Titus, because they have basically the same motives and actions. Consider the Goths vs. Romans dynamic, I also wanted to play up these parallels with the two groups. The Goths are treated like savages, which I thought was really interesting, considering the whole Romulus and Remus origin myth of Rome, so I wanted the Goths to have a wolf motif, along with earthy colors and non-confining fabric. The Romans, on the other hand, have confining, stiff costumes in purples and golds, and the constriction theme of Rome is introduced in Tamora's first costume with the rope binding her wrists.

Her next costume is after she's married Saturninus. She has outwardly adopted the Roman style, but her belt and the trim of her dalmatica still follow the Goth color schemes, showing that her true loyalty still lies with them. The restriction theme can be seen much more clearly here, with stiff cotton for the dalmatica and tunica, which are both full length, her hair being tamed, and her palla.

WHEW, still with me?
Then carry on and go check out my Lavinia costumes!
