Description
Backstory:(Terms from the IDW Generation 1 continuity have been linked to Tfwiki.net.)
Redline of Tarn was born forged, with the outlier ability to combine with bots. Not that he knew it. He left the poverty of his home to become a racer, and branched out from there. While he never could come close to beating Blurr, he found prominence elsewhere - paint, dance, and sculpture. He used his newfound prominence to speak against Functionism and the Senate.
For his dissidence, graffiti, and outspoken nature, he was subjected to Empurata - a needlessly cruel procedure which replaced the head with a single, unexpressive mono-optic, and replaced hands with claws. And they also removed his feet, rendering him barely able to walk. However, something went dreadfully wrong in the procedure, unlocking a wide sadistic streak - or at least, that's what Redline claims. Really, the reason he joined the Decepticons could've been because he was mad with grief. But he's pretty sure the Empurata had something to do with it.
He fought alongside the Decepticons to bring down Cybertron's government, and found that he had a talent for explosives. During this time, he became almost addicted to self-modification, giving himself leg guns, replacing his feet with wheels, adding guns behind his wrists, and installing missile launchers that could flip over his shoulders.
However, he lost interest in the decepticon cause when it called for him to attack an alien world. In his view, what they were doing on Cybertron was fine. It turned out, conquering innocent aliens was where he drew the line, and he defected to the autobots...
Or at least, he tried before the Decepticon Justice Division left him paralyzed, at the brink of death. He was left immobile, on a war-devastated planet, flickering in and out of consciousness until an autobot medic named Spotweld found him and rebuilt him. At that point, he made the effort to become an autobot, though he never truly felt welcome. It was at this point that rumors of the Empurata-induced brain damage began to circulate.
While in the Autobots, he distinguished himself admirably at Simanzi , and actually found work as a weapons designer, building crawler mines, (They're basically ticks from Titanfall) ultracompact fusion shotguns, (which he installed in his arms) and a sonic shotgun. He also served alongside the Wreckers, though mostly as a reserve.
Oh, and he learned he could combine with two bots named Overshoot and a NAIL named Wingspar. He was very happy the Decepticons didn't find out about it.
At some point, after the War, he signed up with Overshoot and Wingspar as part of the Lost Light's crew, on the basis that Overshoot and Wingspar agreed he really needed to relax, and being on a quest with its own renowned (pffft) psychiatrist might do him some good.
Fluffy Note: Inspired by two things: the main characters "Transam 20000" from the anime movie REDLINE, directed by Takeshi Koike. IN fact, that's his altmode. It's just blue and red so he doesn't look like Bumblebee. And also The Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye. Now, you might be thinking that's silly. And you would be right, if not for the fact that The Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye is... The Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye. "MTMTE" for short.
It's a comic about the crew of the Lost Light, a ship with virtually no sane crewmembers. This ship is captained by Rodimus - an aspiring Prime who is made abundantly clear to be such a terrible captain that Megatron would be an improvement. And he actually is, after becoming an autobot. No, seriously, that's a thing that happens. Google that shit.
They're looking to find the mythical Knights of Cybertron - a group of ancient Transformers predating even the Thirteen Primes, who we all thought were the most ancient Transformers in the franchise. Apparently, they left Cybertron for parts unknown, riding city-ships called Titans. For his quest, Rodimus wants the best of Cybertron's autobots. What he gets is a ragtag collection of mentally unstable, lonely, and offbeat expendables, no-hopers and other misfits who join out of desperation, by complete accident, for the sheer fun of it, or in the hope of actually doing something meaningful with their lives. It's a good setup for a bottle episode - characters with interesting, conflicting, exaggerated personalities and backstories stuck in the same room, interacting until something breaks.
Except that there's other stories. Time travel! The horrible thing in the basement! Shockwave's millennia-spanning plot for Cybertron's future! Crazed decepticon remnants bent on destruction! Assassination plots! The Transformer equivalent of the Grim Reaper! The lost moon of Luna 1! And all these transformers are stuck in the middle.
So, inspired by all this, I drew Redline! I even have a good idea of how he transforms. It's... sort of like Rodimus from Transformers: Energon. Maybe I can make instructions later! His design is sort of a hybrid of Energon autobots, Armada autobots, (The idea was that the back missile launchers could be released with a minicon) and War For Cybertron's aesthetic.
...Heh, and TFwiki said Drift was my horrible fancharacter. AS IF!
Fluffy Note 2:
Yes, I'll draw Overshoot and Wingspar soon. Fun fact, Wingspar is female, and I will make as many jokes as I can. Oh, you would not believe how fucking hard it was to come up with a name for a female Transformer that hadn't been used before. Gaaaawd. I realize that having female transformers on Cybertron during most of the IDW Generation 1 Continuity goes against some of canon, but I don't like Arcee's origin story. So whatevs.
