Description
Again, thanks to for the idea! She also provided the layout for the second shot so I could properly position the video ref.Now available on Youtube!
This was so much easier to finish than I though it would be!!! Ahhhh! I am so relieved.
Critiques desired!! (Though please crit the Youtube clip, that one has been improved and is timed better for the most part.) I'd love to know how I can improve. I'm still a little rusty.
Made entirely in Gimp 2.6 (Youtube version assembled in Windows Movie Maker).

also did you learn this at a school or something? if not this is amazing for some1 who thought themselves. There are a few golts in the automail arm hole when he slides down but it isn't sticking out like a sore thumb which is good ^^

Nope, it's more like an open source (free) version of Photoshop. It's not an animation program, I just figured out how to animate with it.

Well, for here on deviantart, I just save the image as a .gif file, but for Youtube, I save all the frames as individual images under different names (in order, because it's easier that way), then open them up in Windows Movie Maker, adjust the time limit of all of them from 7.00 to .10, and replay until I'm satisfied I don't need to tweak anything. Then I export it (or whatever word they have for it) at 720p and upload to youtube.

This is so cool. What exactly was the animation process? Did you draw this frame by frame? I'd love to be able to do stuff like this, so I'm curious about how others are achieving results like this.

Flurrin In reply to nashoba-lusa [2013-04-28 20:16:22 +0000 UTC]
Yes, I did. I took a couple key screenshots from the game so I'd know where the movement would start and end up, then did a sketch, then did the lineart (on separate layers, pasting and previewing the animation in another file when needed), then colored on separate layers and had one background layer. 28 original frames in all, not counting loops.

Wow, that's a lot. What software did you use, by the way? I use Anime Studio Debut 8, but I imagine that there are better things to use.

Oh, wait, sorry, I got the numbers mixed up--there are 33 frames in this animation.
Gimp 2.6. It's not actually an animation program, per se, so what you have is probably better.

xD I guess it would have to depend? Animations are a lot of work, so if I'm not into the idea, I would lose motivation pretty fast, you know? And I don't have paypal set up or anything so I can't take commissions yet.

Well done, actually. I've always wondered what it would be like to learn how to animate something.... but school has been out of the question for YEARS for me.
Sooo, anyway....why's he crying? You don't see this kid cry at all.
Except the very end in Brotherhood.

I never learned, I had to teach myself. Maybe that's not so out of the question.
I can say it probably has something to do with Alphonse, but you'd have to ask as she came up with the idea and I don't know if she wants me spreading it around.
Actually he cries about three times in the series total, more in the manga--he cries at his mother's funeral (which isn't shown in the anime), during his automail surgery when he's worried that Al hates him, it's heavily implied he cries after the incident with Nina, and then again of course at the end. He only cries when it's something REALLY important. That's one thing I love about this anime, people don't just break down crying during the climax of every single episode xD

equigoyle In reply to Flurrin [2013-04-01 23:32:54 +0000 UTC]
That's true. I don't remember him crying in the manga when Nina died, but I know he broke down in the first series. In Brotherhood he got depressed but again, no crying. I'm re-reading the manga though... at least the volumes that I have. Maybe I'll spot something different this time around?
Anyway, I may just check with the other girl... what's her name? Sorry just happened to find your piece by chance and the icon's for peoples sites don't always have their names with them. But yes, I do believe I recall him crying at his mother's funeral. And yet, he WAS just a small boy then. Possibly 7 or 8 years old? Not sure....
But seriously....! You learned on your own? HOW!? That's incredible! Is there a program that you used to help?
That's pretty stinkin' awesome! O.o

Flurrin In reply to equigoyle [2013-04-01 23:55:01 +0000 UTC]
As I said, it was only implied at best. In several shots his hair hides his face and lots of time is cut.
I've started to collect the volumes xD I'm missing 4 and 6, but other than that, I have 1 through 12 due to all the three-in-one collections xD That's how I noticed little-Ed crying at the funeral.

A while ago there used to be a website, doink.com, that had a very simple vector animation program. It was extremely easy to use and I learned a ton just experimenting with it, but in the end, the websites fell to financial issues and all that remains of it now are ipad apps--and I don't have an ipad. I still had GIMP, which is a free, photo-shop like program, but it's REALLY different to use that, so I had to relearn a lot of stuff.

Wow. I totally didn't know there were even online programs. Too bad they're gone now.
I remember seeing little Ed crying, but he was a child then. Still, it was really cool. I'll have to bump a note to your friend then and see what he's crying about.
Anyway, sorry for replying so late. Haven't had a lot of time lately.

Late again, but I've noticed the same thing. I think, though, that sometimes some people perceive some messages as an end comment to whatever conversation they're having. I do the same thing sometimes. 'Cause sometimes maybe there's nothing more to say. It's hard to say.
