Description
So, um... shipping!! Yay?!Heheh, I haven't released a vector in a while, mainly due to the fact that I've been extremely busy in real life, and I've also been working on this vector (and a vector for an art trade). This vector took waay too long, mostly because I was doing everything from scratch and needed to try to find some pretty obscure references to base different portions of their poses off of (such as RD's wing). I also wanted to try to get everything looking absolutely perfect, which meant a lot of tweaking and trial and error. On the plus side, I feel like I learned a lot about pony anatomy from doing this vector, and I also discovered something new with the powerstroke in inkscape!! There's a new "join" type for sharp corners called "extrapolate", which will basically follow the curve out to a point. This is infinity times better than a miter, which merely goes straight out to a point at the curve angle, and is really useful in the mane and tail tips.
Big thanks to everypony at the for their help on critiquing this piece, hopefully it came out well! I'm going to try to start releasing more vectors regularly, assuming I can get less busy in real life
Annyhow, I hope you like this!! Feel free to critque it too! I'm still learning what looks right in terms of perspective and stuff, and hopefully I made some strides in this vector, but I am definitely still learning! Svg can be found here (Inkscape 0.49 required): [link]
If you do use this (or any of my other artwork), please let me know so I can check out what you make with it!

Rainbow dash is not seeing what kind of horrors Fluttershy is going to do on her. Both facial expressions aren't matching.

Well, i'm not a fan of shipping but i think you did a great job ( is rainbow's wing caressing fluttershy's hoof? ) anyway, i love the pose and expressions.
I'm just curious, when you say you did everything from scratch, you mean you did it without tracing even from a sketch? If that's the case, i'm really envious i admire artists able to create original vectors

Thanks!! Yep, I did this whole vector without tracing I did have a few reference images that I was looking at while vectoring, especially for tricky parts like Dash's wing (which I didn't intentionally draw to be caressing Fluttershy's hoof, but I can totally see where it looks like that
). I'm definitely still working on getting the proportions down, but I think a big part of creating original vectors is really setting down all the shapes and then tweaking them to see what looks good

I hope i'll be able to do something like that someday, i'm trying to get better at sketching but i think this is what everyone who works with vectors should aim for

BEST SHIP. I have an idea on what this could this possibly could be used as artwork for
a story I'm writing.
That is very nicely vectored by the way. Very nice.

Hmm, I was trying to get them correct, but I'm definitely still learning proportionality and whatnot... Do you have any ideas on how I could improve the proportions?

Fluttershy is the only one that really bothers me. Dash's proportions are decent enough (other than that curled wing; I think it'd look better straight out). Fluttershy's head looks a bit too big at that angle, and her neck looks too long. If the head was tilted a little more away from Dash, it might look better. I think her hind leg shouldn't be curled up so high (if it were laying stretched out over one of Dash's it'd look a bit better, I think). I dunno, just my two cents.

Thanks!! I can definitely see that Fluttershy's head and neck are a bit on the large side... I might play around with the sizing tomorrow to see if I can get it to look a bit better. As for her rear leg, I was kinda trying to get it to look somewhat bent, although it does look like it's supposed to be wrapped around Dash's leg. I'll have to fiddle with that too... I tried to have it straight, but that also looked somewhat off, so maybe somewhere in between...
Thanks for the tips!

That extrapolate feature sounds oh so very nice. I wish they'd hurry up on getting a Mac version of 0.49 out.

Hopefully they'll have one out soon! I know =SirCxyrtyx was trying to compile it from source on the mac, not sure if he succeeded... If you're feeling daring you could try doing that

Hmm, I might have to ask him about that. As for doing it myself though... [link]

Thanks, Flutterguy. ^^ Is it worth it to go download v0.49 of Inkscape for the extrapolate feature? I'm hoping my ellipse by 5 points tool would still work in v0.49.

Hehe, no problem Hourglasspony! I'd definitely recommend downloading Inkscape 0.49, there's a lot of nice new features and improvements... 0.49 introduces powerstrokes, which I've been pretty much using exclusively for my past few vectors, which are strokes with variable width. They take a little while to get used to, but you can check out the tutorial in my journal for an introduction. They also redid the layering system a little bit, so you can now drag and drop layers And yeah, extrapolate is a very nice feature (I think Inkscape might be the only vectoring program to have it). Your ellipse by 5 point extension should work in 0.49, I don't think they broke any extensions.
If you get stuck downloading it or have any questions about any of the new features, let me know and I can help out

I don't know where to find it. The last stable download available for Inkscape on their website is v0.48.2.

Yeah, Inkscape 0.49 is a development release, so you need to get a nightly build if you want to use it. You can follow the links in the Development Versions section of Inkscape download page, or jump right to the nightly builds here (for Windows): [link] . There, download the latest file that doesn't have a -dbg in it. You'll also need 7-zip installed ([link] ). Once you've downloaded the file, unzip it and run inkscape.exe. You can replace your current Inkscape version if you want, or you could just have it separate to try it out Hope this helps
