Description
Why are you so angry?I've never met you before
You're a stranger on a bus
Just happened to be across from me
But here you are
Screaming in my face
What do you expect me to do?
Apologize for being me?
Apologize for believing in something bigger than me?
Would that be enough to satisfy your blind anger?
I'm not your enemy, but you can't see that
Wrapped in your blanket of bigotry and hate
Calling me names you wouldn't dare to speak in front of your mother
Just because I believe in miracles and trust and love.
Is that the problem?
Do you hate me because I want to see the good?
Because I am taught to love and serve?
Are you that threatened in your bitterness and cynicism
By the doctrine I follow?
But you don't see it that way.
To you, I am not a person.
I am not just a 17-year-old girl, trying to find her way through a crazy world
I am the symbol of ancient grudges, of your so-called "hypocritical fancies"
I am a judge, a Pharisee, blinded to my own faults in my haste to judge those who don't believe.
I am not me, I am it.
And I sit there, trying not to scream at your hatred
I AM A PERSON TOO
What will it take before you see that?
For you to stop judging me by the actions of
Long-dead popes
And
Illiterate serfs
And
Greedy kings
And
Modern demagogues
Their actions don't define me
I won't let your hatred define me
I won't apologize for being what I am
My God doesn't have to answer to you.
