Early mornings were Loamwhisker's favourite time of day to go hunting. In the early morning mist, mice and voles were still sleepy, poking their noses from their burrows. Leaving Feather Clan camp, the medicine cat made her way to her favourite hunting grounds, the Mice Fields, to the southwest of camp. Dewdrops tickled the she-cat's nose as she prowled through the tall grass, making each pawstep as stealthy as possible. Pausing and listening, she could hear the squeak of a small animal. She turned in the direction of the sound, and stalked closer to where her quarry hid. The small creature was busily scurrying between grass stalks, sniffing around for edibles. Peering over the tall grass, on her hind paws, Loamwhisker watched the tasty creature as it hunted for a meal. Staying perfectly still, she gathered herself for a leap. Like a coiled spring, she leapt straight into the air, diving for the vole! It just barely had time to see her shadow, before a quick tap with her paw ended its life. Picking it up by the tail, she looked out over the fields. This was one vole for the fresh kill pile. There were plenty more vermin in these fields and she foresaw an enjoyable day of hunting ahead of her.
