Surfkit was almost immediately singled out by her mother Pitchstar, who decided she'd craft Surfkit into the perfect heir to leadership. Surfkit was ecstatic to have her mother pay so much attention to her that she was willing to do whatever was asked of her. Unofficial battle training began for her when she was barely 3 moons old. This was the only time in Surfstar's life where she had a close relationship with her brother Raystorm.

Apprentice:
Unsurprisingly, Surfpaw was mentored by Pitchstar herself. Her training with her mother very quickly went from exciting to unsettling as Pitchstar dropped the safety precautions she'd taken when Surfpaw was a kit. Rough training and harsh words left poor Surfpaw terrified of her mother and even more terrified of failing to meet her expectations. She did her best to shut out any and all distractions and become the most powerful warrior she could be. She didn't at all agree with Pitchstar's war-mongering ideals, but in her mind she was only trying to get stronger to be a good warrior, not to perpetuate the war-hungry reputation that Pitchstar had created for BayClan.

Warrior:
When Surfpaw was named Surfstrike in honor of her "ferocity in battle," she finally realized that her mother didn't care about her at all; Pitchstar was only interested in who she WANTED her daughter to be. It was then that Surfstrike started trying to pull away from Pitchstar and her toxic personality. She instead gravitated towards senior healer Dappledrop, who provided her with more love and compassion than her mother ever had. Dappledrop told her that her mother was no longer following the will of StarClan and that Surfstrike would have to be the one to right her mother's wrongs someday. During her time as a warrior, Surfstrike made an attempt to reconnect with her brother Raystorm. They actually managed to be on speaking terms and Surfstrike held a lot of hope for their relationship. Unfortunately, all of her efforts were shattered when she was chosen to become deputy instead of her brother.

Deputy:
To Surfstrike, her promotion to deputy came out of nowhere. She knew she wasn't qualified to lead, but Dappledrop's words stuck with her: she'd have to be the one to right Pitchstar's wrongs someday. So, she did her best to be a model deputy- not the deputy her mother wanted her to be, but her own idea of what a good deputy should be. To further separate herself from Pitchstar, she asked Dappledrop a question that she'd been wanting to ask him since she'd been given her warrior name: is there any way she could go to the Crystal Grotto and beg StarClan to change it? Dappledrop agreed it was worth a try. StarClan was sympathetic to her situation and they gifted her with the new name Surfshine. She returned to BayClan with a new sense of purpose. Not long after she'd been promoted, Pitchstar finally fell to the very war she'd started. Dappledrop and Surfshine returned to the Crystal Grotto on the next half moon to give her her nine lives.

Leader:
Currently, Surfstar is doing the best she can to lead her Clan and learn how a real leader should act, since the only qualities her mother had imparted on her were battle tactics and fighting moves. She's struggled a bit with this since Dappledrop passed away, but she communicates with him relatively often in dreams and he still always offers her his encouragement and guidance. With Raystorm as her deputy, Surfstar is hoping that this newest set of leaders will mark the beginning of a new era of peace.

The brown molly usually wasn’t this bad-tempered or confrontational. Maybe it was the ache of her wound or the lack of activity in her Clan recently, but she was tiring of Carrionheart’s attitude. She growled softly to grab the molly’s attention.

“See, it’s funny you say that when you’re pretty effectively trapped in our leader’s den with three fully-trained warriors.” Lumberfoot drew herself up to her full height, filling the entire entrance to the den. She made eye contact first with Mothstar and then Cactusblossom and bowed her head to them as an apology for speaking out. Then she returned her glare to Carrionheart and continued to hold her aggressive stance. Despite all that was going through her head, Lumberfoot felt a small glow of pride inside of her. She felt like she’d never had the chance to be a real warrior, and she felt like she was doing a fine job for handling the first real threat she’s been presented with.
