Over 540 million years ago, during the Cambrian period, Anomalocaris was king of the sea. At three feet long, it wasn't especially large by today's standards, but at the time it was the world's largest predator, equipped with a crushing mouth for killing the smaller invertebrates on which it fed. It also had two grasping tentacles protruding from its head to grip its prey-- these were the first parts of it ever found by scientists, and at one point they were believed to be a separate animal.
