I don't think you're understanding the term properly. It's Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis which is a disease which causes the nerves in the body to degenerate. This means that your brain loses its ability to control any of your intentional functions through the spinal cord. Things like walking, sitting up, and even breathing are things that are eventually lost.
