Okay, funny story. I totally thought the deadline for this contest was the end of this month. Well, silly me saved the date wrong. It ended at the end of MARCH!! *cry* Wow. My brain really malfunctioned on that one. Ah well. I found out late last night before I went to bed, and all I could do was laugh.

Good thing is, it was an excellent challenge. It was a contest outside of DA, and they provided all the stock photos. 12 only. Of those 12, we were supposed to use an element of at least 4 in our manipulation. They purposely chose very difficult stock... and I really had to drink a lot of coffee to come up with this one. Some of the other photos were platters of food... a grocery store aisle... etc. etc.

Anyway, if you check the link - you'll see I decided to use very minimal elements from the pictures. At first I was trying to do too much, and my first idea was getting really busy. At last, I just told myself to think with color and form, and not with element and detail, and this is what I came up with.

So, in the end, it was a challenge, and a lesson in construction if nothing else. I probably never in my life would have made a piece containing a woman with a flamingo wrapped around her head. But since I had to work with what they gave me... Viva La Flamingo.

(We were allowed to use any and all plugins, add-ons, programs, etc. we wanted. We just could not use other pictures aside from what they provided. So the only stock from DA I used, was a feather brush stock from )

I absolutely love this!! My husband nicknamed me his flamingo & now I collect them. I've even named my website after them (flamingogirl). It's wonderful to see a flamingo art piece and you've made it so beautifully. It's gorgeous!

what they say is true: your art looks more like a digital drawing from complete imagination rather than a manip. I love your style! This one is truly unique.

You know that old expression, β€œyou could have knocked me over with a feather”… your flamingo feathers have certainly knocked me over, in a most appreciative kind of way. You’ve created a fantastic piece out of the rather mundane stock – using chair material for the background, a flamingo serving as an exotic headpiece, and all so beautifully merged and painted – wow! Grrrr-arrrgh about the deadline, now you won’t be able to get a monetary reward, but you sure get our admiration!

Wow, that's a really fascinating blend of flamingo and femme fatale. I love her face, but I particularly like the way the feathers blend into her hair. Very imaginative!

I think this is a real improvement over the traditional coonskin hats.

PatriciaRodelaArtist [2007-05-22 16:33:37 +0000 UTC]

Wow! This finished work is really amazing. You had to really think about what stock piece to use where. The model's face really came out flawless. I love how you used the flaming's wing to hide part of her face and the other wing as a wrap around her shoulders. This looks like a poster for the 40's & 50's when women wore hats and at times their hats were outrageous in their size and content. Well done, Aimee! It's a shame that you missed the deadline, but your still a winner in my book!

I think you should give a little technical blurb on each piece you create! I find even your short description of the process (in your reply to the previous comment) fascinating! I like this piece, I can't decide what I think she is thinking, which is the reason I like it and it feels different from most of your other works. Sorry to hear that you missed the contest deadline though!

Foxfires In reply to xxGWENxx [2007-05-22 16:09:05 +0000 UTC]

Thanks sweety!! I should definitely try to add some tips and tricks in. Now if only I can keep them from being convoluted!! lol

I can't decide what she's thinking either. But the flamingo sure looks content! LOL It definitely has a different feel to my usual stuff... I really like how the background turned out. The stripes really are pieces of the chair that I cropped and resized. Though, I had to jump through a lot of hoops to resample the stripes, and lay them down straight. Otherwise, they would have still held the same curve as the chair. It would have been easier to just sample the color of the chair, and reproduce the stripes using color only... but I wanted to stay true to the contest rules, and actually use the picture element. So I saved the PSD that shows the resized, cropped, and edited stripes in each individual layer.

Yeah, after all that work - I'm so bummed!! Grand prize was $1000.00 *CRY* Ah well... next year!!!

You know what? I am currently sitting here doing a full system scan by keyword, to try and find my Maestro's Muse folder. LOL So far, all I can find is the size I uploaded to DA, not the full sized PSD. Grr! From now on, I vow never to take organizing so lightly. lolol
