Description -------------

DISCLAIMER: I apologize for the crummy way this picture looks. I'm feeling sick today, but I felt like doodling something and this was the result. It looks about as sickly as I feel.

-------------

Sonic and Dr. Eggman decide to check out their American comic books and boy are they in for a surprise! Even Old Man Robotnik understands that they're supposed to be funny characters! So howcome the stories got so serious after only 20-some issues? Was the premise of "Dr. Robotnik comes up with a nasty scheme and Sonic foils his plans in some funny manner" too difficult to work with? Seriously, I grew up reading these comics, but stopped reading around issue 28 or so when the writers began to trade comedy for drama. Now I'm trying to get back into it all by reading the comics online and I can't believe how confusing and twisted the stories have gotten! I would think that the Sonic comics should be something that match Sonic's carefree, energetic personality, but these things are so confusing that I can't imagine the blue blur himself bothering to waste time figuring them out!

*sighs* Please, guys, reboot the series. I want to see Sonic pulling funny pranks on Eggman again.

On another note, Eggman points out the very thing I thought even as a kid when I read the comics. Why didn't they just use Robotnik's appearance from the games? The comic version is just plain weird looking!

Agreed. I personally wish they'd have abandoned the old series by now and made Sonic X the new running comic. Or simply doing as many comics have done and start over from the beginning to make things simple for old and new readers alike.

Such 'history remastered' would be of great potential (d'oh) value, but it is much easier for developers of this comic to keep on gluing brand new exciting chapters to already pre-existing set. Since the current history of Sonic Archie is already an amorphous, irrecognizable cluster capable of sucking up everything in vicinity, kind of like a gargantuan ameboa, it is easier to provide just another load of fuel, rather than attempt to rebuild and rethink entire darn thing....not to mention, that redesigning this particular storyline would be an intellectual effort worthy of Nobel prize, I fear.

Forget redesigning! Just end this insipid story and start anew with Sonic, Amy, Tails, and Knuckles as our heroes fighting against Dr. Robotnik, Shadow, and any other nasties the old Eggman manages to unearth! It's not as though the games themselves don't already have plenty of personable characters and a solid enough concept.

In such case, there is still this spirit of 'excess epicness' looming over entire franchise.

After all, such fresh starts carry enormous risks. Not long ago I have built journal entry dedicated to such 'let's start anew' dream within other (though connected through inspirational conduct) franchise... if this particular experiment pulls through, I will have higher hopes for such eventuality in Sonic's case.

I suppose it's just that, for me, I've always loved Sonic's carefree attitude and the new comics don't seem to embody that. There's something about his impish smirk and oldschool appearance that should make anyone feel welcome to the series, as though Sonic's an old friend they've always known. And, as far as I'm concerned, the games have kept that feeling for the most part. But the comics just isolate those who haven't kept up with them.

I agree with you on this.
For a while in the games they started to do more serious stories but these ened up being poorly written, Sonic is just not suited for the serious stories (Were talking about a blue toon Hedgehog for crying out loud). Luckily, in the recent games like Sonic Unleashed they're starting to get back to doing the cartoony stuff.

Even in games with more serious storylines like Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, and Sonic Chronicles, the characters reacted to the serious situations with their typical silly natures. I suppose one could complain about Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog '06, but that person would be unaware of the fact that those games were just bad dreams that never really happened.

I really have to disagree, considering that I really can sink my teeth into the story lines of the comics, dramatic or no--though you are right, there is a lot of backstory from previous issues that would leave new readers picking up a new issue lost. Although, I think this mainly because I like to think of the Archie Sonic universe as almost entirely detached from the game universe; meaning a separate, more light-hearted series on the side that takes place in a different continuity altogether would be alright, too. That way, the both of us could be happy.

I actually don't mind a dark story as long as the characters still behave like their old selves. Sonic and his pals are supposed to make jokes about everything that happens around them. When they're all serious, it's just weird to me. Although I do think that the series could stand to have a simpler story. A very complex story for such a simple concept as Sonic just annoys me.

I guess it's all just a matter o' tastes, then. Like I said, I kinda see Archie Sonic and co. and Sonic and co. from the games, while similar, to be different characters altogether, mainly due to the differing events around them.

I understand that much. It's just that, having started with the comic from the beginning, it's surreal to me to see the characters who used to be so goofy acting so serious.

Well, now that we've settled that, I will say this: seeing this pair's reaction to their Archie alter egos, which are highly different and darker (something that can be agreed upon by both fans and detractors), is amusing, because I'm a big fan of the more light-hearted side just as much as the other, and I can honestly see them reacting like this. I especially like Robotnik's line, since it really does showcase the game universe's version of him as being less of a mad (though, in my opinion, undeniably cool) monster, and really much more of a generally likeable, over-the-hill man who happens to like robots/machinery more than naturally-made things, is a little off in the head, and has a nasty habit of letting his temper and pride get the best of him.

My personal favorite portrayal of Dr. Robotnik is the mad scientist who seems to think he's doing the world a favor by turning everything into robots. I love villains with very warped views of reality, and those who think that they're really the heroes while the hero himself is a villain are always amusing to me.

I know, I just kinda panicked and thought the conversation might have been getting too drawn-out, and took a quick coward's exit statement.

I never read the comics, but I seen all of the first TV series, and some of the second and 3rd. True, there has been a large change with sonic later on. they're more series in later ones. I actually like all of them, even if they're all different. The first one was more of a fun cartoon with alot of humor, and the other 2 may not be as funny, but they still have good stories. Plus, I think they still have they're entertaining moments, even though they don't have the humor the first series and early comics have. But the first series will always be my favorite.

good pic. I can imagine sonic and Eggman saying those things comparing the early sonic and later.

The TV series was darker, but didn't get TOO baffling. The comic, on the other hand... *shakes his head* The strangest thing was how the comic seemed to mutate from the first cartoon's feel, to the second, and then became this bizarre multi-dimensional soap opera!

Hah clever.

Sorry about that dude, but you know how crasy the copyrights are on the sonic comics. If the site is too wildly advertised it may be picked up and censored.

I really agree with you on this, I used to collect Sonic comics when I was a kid and they used to be really funny, but now they're just
X-treme with no humor at all.

FractiousLemon In reply to Zim999 [2009-08-07 15:35:52 +0000 UTC]

It's actually pretty funny to read some of the very early ones with wacky Looney Tunes styled humor and Marvel comics inside jokes and then compare them to the modern ones. It's like the comics are making fun of what they ultimately become!

I'm hoping we see a resurgence of it soon. I'm already seeing traces of a retro-90's fad in TV shows like Chowder and Flapjack, and the 90's cartoons were infamous for being crazy and silly. If only we can get all of those politically correct babies to quit whining so our Toon pals can go back to doing what they do best. Being as crazy as possible and making us laugh!
