Description Now, before acting like a fucking dumbass, read the entire description.

Why? It taught us values.
Granted, it may have but it also taught us hatred and intolerance towards people, see the big past for example, salem witch trials, Templar crusades.

It won't get rid of anything!
Yes, it may not but it would get greatly reduce bigotry, racism, sexism and all the other things, and we'd be less divided. And yes, there'd still be jackasses around like Stalin for example but at least less people would've died, because we'd have less motivations for things like the Holocaust, WBC, etc.

And what would this exactly accomplish?
We'd have advanced research, space travel, cures for deadly diseases (stem cell research), ability to regrow limbs (stem cell research) and many things stem cell research would have.

And what would we lose?
Holidays and death tolls, to be honest, it sounds like a fair trade, especially since I don't celebrate holidays.

I'm not saying that religion has caused all problems, I'm just saying that we could do without it because mankind used it wrong, and if you want to do it right, just focus on love and tolerance (no pony reference intended) instead.

I am still not understanding you. Should I show you that stamp where it says that links shouldn't be your argument?

Really, religion is not the problem, people are. If you dive into various so-called "dangerous" religions like Christianity and Islam, you will find that they are actually quite peaceful. People just twist the religions tofit their own motives, just like they would twist anything else.

Religion has done a lot of good things for people, but people have not done a lot of good things for religion. Getting rid of Buddhism, Taoism, Christianity, Islam, Judaism, and a whole lot of other religions is impossible, to say the least, and if there were no religio, humans would find something else to screw up, and people would be petitioning to eliminate that as well. It never ends.

While sometimes it can do good things, they CAN do bad things.

And what the fuck is a "religio"?

Inemiset In reply to Fragdog [2012-08-07 19:55:37 +0000 UTC]

"religio" is a typo for "religion."

Really, I looked it up and it's meant as a word to show the strength of a bond.

If one friend says it to another, it is a manly way of showing your appreciation and respect of their friendship, the louder it's said, the greater the level of respect.

Religion is like a penis. sad to say.
I mean, it's okay to be proud of it. It's okay to have one.
but don't start waving it around in public and don't shove it down our throats.

It's also done more good for humanity than anything else. Charities would be rendered non-existent, for example.

Also, keep in mind that slavery was ended because of religion. It was not started because of religion since slavery is an economic system first and foremost, so were there no religion, it's safe to say that it would have lasted longer.

In the latter portion of the Roman Empire, most of the Romans fled the large cities because the plagues were entering in the East. However, the Christians stayed and helped the old and sick escape the plagues, even at the cost of their own lives. But you're right, that's bigotry and hatred.

Also, you can try the "stem cell" thing all you want, but keep in mind that 1. healthcare started off as a religious thing. 2. Some of our greatest scientists, such as Gallileo and Newton, would not have done their work were it not for their faith, so science would be even more behind than it is now.

I'd argue atheism has done more damage than religion, but I don't support getting rid of atheism. You want to get rid of a belief system, you can't stamp it out. The Romans tried, and it consumed them. The way to get rid of it is to win over the hearts of every single person, one way or the other.

Leviticus 25:44-46 (NRSV)

As for the male and female slaves whom you may have, it is from the nations around you that you may acquire male and female slaves. You may also acquire them from among the aliens residing with you, and from their families that are with you, who have been born in your land; and they may be your property. You may keep them as a possession for your children after you, for them to inherit as property. These you may treat as slaves, but as for your fellow Israelites, no one shall rule over the other with harshness.

Starlow-FTW In reply to Naeomi [2013-03-11 23:19:43 +0000 UTC]

That's great. I hear that all the time from people who don't quite understand the evolution of slavery and its presence in different cultures. Slavery of Israel during Biblical times is not what, as some schools will literally deem it today, "what the white people did." Two different systems, two different purposes.

There is no shame in taking the Bible in context with history. I believe it's a moral duty to learn all you can about it and make what conclusion you will. But, well, that's just my opinion.

Fragdog In reply to Starlow-FTW [2012-08-07 19:40:24 +0000 UTC]

And religion also promoted slavery before.

I agree that it's also a way to get rid of it, and not many people believe in mythology anymore as they used to, someday, I could see this happen to almost any religion and out of all the religions I heard of, the most ridiculous one I heard of is Jediism (even more than $cientology), it's dumber than any 20th century-made religion and is about worshipping Star Wars, I shutter to think about it and Star Wars is okay but god.

Starlow-FTW In reply to Fragdog [2012-08-07 20:23:25 +0000 UTC]

But economics started it. And money is the root of all evil, so maybe we should stop using money? x)

Jediism? Please tell me you're joking. Also, wasn't there one that was about a television show? I can't remember quite what it is, but it was a hit on dA for a while. You know what I'm talking about?

Money is used as world control but there is ways to get around it.

I'm sorry, I'm not joking, I honestly wish I was: [link]

Yeah, that's your opinion. But humans are assholes and kill for the most stupid reasons - including religion. And if it's not religion it's anything else. I think it won't change anything.

Fragdog In reply to Engelsblau [2012-08-07 19:25:26 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, the past cannot be undone but if there wasn't religion at all, I think things would be a LOT different.

I believe that religion can be for good just as much as it can be for evil. People will always believe what they want to, religious or not. Religion also gives us communities and culture.

I agree, there are some good religious people, and evil ones too...
Good religious people include: Martin Luther King, Mother Teresa...
Evil religious people include: Fred Phelps(EWW!!!), Adolf Hitler...

Can you come up with more?

Everybody gets to decide for themselves how to use it. Personally, I wish it was only used for love, but that isn't my choice.
