Description

My self-appointed spin on Inktober-type challenges for 2020 was “Monstober” wherein I fill out different prompts of a resurrected monster meme I made. This challenge/meme/devotion was very simple the actual month of October as my only requirement for month long challenges is to begin a picture on the day of that prompt, not necessarily finish one...but then I got to coloring and a new challenge reared its head, for I combined coloring the sketches with my 31 October color palette prompts you can see here and had to choose the right coloring for each drawing. Yeeey for making things harder on yourself.

Oct 1) Classic Monster.

Classic ‘under-the-bed’-monsters (not necessarily boogiemen, mind you, which have their own slot on this meme) have always been hard for me to design because I really enjoy sticking to folklore than nonsense creatures akin to what you see in Monsters Inc. or any bargain bin Halloween clipart. But I certainly gave it a try!

#6 “This is Halloween” features a muted color palette with bright oranges and greens as seen in the ORIGINAL cuts of The Nightmare Before Christmas where Halloween Town was supposed to stand out visually from Christmas Town and not be this ugly Dinsey-enhanced trainwreck where Sally has blueberry skin.

Oct 2) Were-Creature

This dapper werewolf man and werepanther woman are actually original characters usually drawn in a chibi style, but here I decided to give them detail.

#23 “Posada’s Wake” is based upon the aged, usually yellow-orange-or-brown prints of Jose Guadalupe Posada .

Oct 3) Angels and Demons

As said in the meme, only one of these characters is a made up angel or demon and you have to guess which ones are the angels and which ones are the demons. Hints:

  • They’re all based on Abrahamic mythologies and some Gnosticism. No Buddhist, Taoist, Hindu, Greeco-Roman, Egyptian, Nordic, Celtic, Slavic, or Indeginous heavenly beings/demons here.
  • I recommend turning to the Lesser Key of Solomon in identifying who’s who or what kind of demon/angel they are.

#8 “Proud Corazon” is a color scheme very much as odds with the angels and demons in this picture. If the name wasn’t a give away, it’s inspired by the marigold bridge scene from Coco.

Oct 4) Undead

Zombie gets mad when a nosy social-media Wiccan decides to use her teddy for a summoning spell.

Don’t take dead people’s toys. It’s rude.

#13 “Vintage #2” is one of a few palettes inspired by different vintage Halloween cards I’ve found online. The other two are more typical for what one thinks of when they imagine “Vintage Halloween”, but this is pretty nice too.

Oct 5) Witch

Been really into Baba Yaga recently so I let her take the spotlight.

Yaga’s gonna have a rough time in the 20th/21st century when she finds people who are into bony legged hagbats like her. Centuries worth of sl*tshamming doesn’t prepare you for that kind of thing. Also I gave Yaga a pig cause I thought that’d be cute.

#21 “Frenchy Kitty”’s color palette comes from the famous Chat Noir poster .

Oct 6) Vampire

TFW you’re the leader of a cauldron of vampires but your brides give you no respect...which you probably don’t deserve if you’re a nasty vampire lord who’s sired them into this new un-life anyway.

#28 “Redrum” takes its color scheme from a Stanley Kubrik movie. Can you guess which one?
