Tools of Your Trade
Ah, October - the time for tea, Halloween and… Inktober! But Inktober or not, in my opinion, ink is a wonderful medium to work with and in this article I’d like to tell you a bit about it. The information is kept general and for a first insight, so if you want to know more, I recommend to keep reading - or just get ink and try it for yourself!

What is ink?
Inks have quite an old story – its roots reach back to the Ancient Egypt around 3000 B.C. and China around 2600 B.C., though the consistence changed over the time. It got adjusted to writing, drawing and printing.
Ink is created from pigments or dyes and a binder. For the typical black ink fine powdered lampblack is used, but ink exists in many colours and are usually mixable.
In general, there are two kinds:
- water soluble ink
- waterproof ink (typically the ink in artists' products)
Typical names you might stumble across are Indian ink and Chinese ink. Chinese ink was adjusted in India later on. Today it is important to know that there can be a difference in the ingredients (for example shellac in Indian ink which creates a sheen when dried), but not all producers make a difference and both are sometimes even used as synonyms.
You can mix the ink with water, but once it is on the paper, you can’t remove it anymore – this is something important to be aware of.
Working with ink – the tools
In the first place, you'll need ink! 
Like with any other traditional medium, it can make a difference which ink and paper you use - not every black ink is the same black and not every paper works well with it. I recommend to test it before you use it on a final work.
Both ink pens as well as dip pens can achieve similar results in the thickness of lines. Still, it is not the same and both can create different moods in a work. Ink pens offer a constant flow of ink, while the steel nibs need to be dipped into the pot. However, the flexibility of nib pens is much higher and can be used to create much more dynamic lines.
Other useful materials:
- Water: for creating ink wash (thinning ink with water to create different grey scales) or just keeping your brushes and pens clean…they get dirty fast.
- A little palette/plate: for mixing inks/ink and water
- A tissue (or more): for lifting ink from the paper (when it hasn’t dried yet) or when you spilled something. Also good to dry your brushes and pens gently when you cleaned them.
Some advice:: Beside black ink, I recommend to try white ink, too – may it be to correct little mistakes, adding highlights or drawing on black or darker paper.
Shading methods with lines and brush
Lines
Creating contrast with overlaying lines or thinner and thicker lines. Lines can transfer a certain form or texture, too.
Ink wash
Tonal shading through a grey scale range.
Working with ink – a WIP
For this work, I used ink pens (black 0.1mm and 0.3mm and white) and ink wash on watercolour paper.
Sketch and Pre-Drawing
Like with any other medium, this is not essential. But sketches and pre-drawings can help to get an idea which part is going to be shaded - and which areas need to be kept white.
The First Layers
After that I inked the basic lines with 0.1mm pen and cleaned the pencil. To create smoother transitions with the ink wash, I added a thin layer of water in the parts the ink wash should go.
When it dried, I used a 0.3mm pen to redraw the lines and a 0.1mm for cross hatching.
Refinements
The following steps were the repeating of the previous ones: darkening the areas step by step with ink wash and futher cross hatching.
When I was satisfied with the shading and contrast, I took a white ink pen and added small details and refinements.

Sehr schön! Ein Hinweis das "gelöste Tusche" (wie nennt man das in Deutsch?) keine Pigmente enthält (wie bei Windsor & Newton), und daher schneller verblasst als traditionelle Tusche. Das ist auch ein Grund warum man pigmentierte Tusche aufschütteln soll: damit sich die am Boden abgesetzten Pigmente wieder verteilen.
