Description
Hurray, I finished! This took so long to render, it was really quite horrible, but i managed! This is my OC Glass.. umh yeah her markings doesn't really show and she's green but meh. This was a really interesting painting to do! I made my own brushes for the first time (foliage brushes), i try to use some of the texture brushes i have and i even used a texture in the painting! (wooow) i also started out grayscale and did the color later, which turned out alright. And a HUGE thanks to which helped me to get the legs right on the wolf/dog/thing on the sketch in my sketchbook and a thanks to all the lovely people who visited the livestreams when i painted this
and idk what to call this so if you have a suggestion, tell me!
and sorry for the blur, it looks sharp and clear in PS... <-<

Wow, this looks very good, but i am afraid i must say i am not very impressed with the legs on the dog/wolf/ting. Well, they were all fine except for the one front let that is closest to us. It is clearly missing an entire joint... I fell like an asshole for saying it like this, but you get so many nice comments that i become jealous, and this is my way of getting back on you. ย
I still won't give up on the foreground, middleground and background thing. You say you don't get it, but it's really simple and there isn't much to get, only a lot to do right. In the foreground there are only some leaves in the corner, not much, but they play a very important part in giving the viewer an entirely different relationship with the wolf. In the middleground you have the trunk, the ground beneath the trunk, and some leaves just beside the top part of the trunk. The rest is the background. You also have some white sparely things all around which helps to sett the atmosphere.ย
Because you added those leaves in the corner, the picture gets more depth to it, and the scene feels closer. Think of it, if the leaves weren't there, this could almost be something someone could see from a telescope from far far away, but not with those leaves there (i keep thinking about what i said here, and i am not entirely sure i agree with myself, so i mean, if you don't understand, or agree with what i said just now, don't try to, because, i might just not make sense. There is something to it, but i am not sure it's what i said it is. ). Because of the size of the leaves, it is clear that we are very close.ย

well yeah i can agree with you on that. I'm still learning canine anatomy (or rather, i'm going to start learning it sometime soon...someeetimeee)
I think there must have been a misunderstanding here, because I do understand and use the concept of dividing a picture into foreground, middleground and background every time I do larger paintings. I added the leaves so the eye wouldn't travel out of the picture, but return in again and for the added depth as you said. I don't remember what i didn't understand but i think it was something about the way you said it which i didn't agree with or whatever. I couldn't find the comment. It was probably just a misunderstanding.

Ohh, i just had to check that one more time; if you press ctrl+ENTER, you submit your comment... i don't like it.
Yes, where was i, yes, middle ground, not much to say there, i'll get back to the wolf later. The trunk is very detailed, i like it. Like, holy shit that is very detailed kinda. Are there brushes involved with this magic? I don't know how brushes work very well, can brushes even do stuff like this? Anyway, the background is nice, but not very special actually... Yes, there is some light, and the trees are all over the place, and there is a kinda hole tunnel. What if you could have had a little girl standing behind one of the trunks in the background, not something you notice at first, but later. That way your could putt her in the golden ratio somewhere and make use of that, because you haven't done so far in this picture. And i am not talking about one of the closer trunks, those with texture, but only a small outline of a small body in almost the same color as the trunk beside her. I think that would add a lot.ย
The wolf, is cool. Kinda reminds me of a more serous version of Umbreon, you know, the pokemon. I, again, really like the white outline around it, it helps for getting attention, just be careful not to over do it. For example, i think it was a good choice to let the outlining fade with the light as you approached the tail. Also really reminds me of Nasus, now that i think about it. Google it. His face is a bit strange, but, then again, it isn't exactly a wolf or a dog, and so, it is entirely imaginable for such a creature to have existed, or exist in the future. Or now for all we know. I don't know if there is a story behind this, or something. The title kinda says it all actually. (The girl would have added a lot i think (just sayi'n)) Do you draw thing like this first: www.drawingteachers.com/image-โฆ clearly planning out all the joints? If not, maybe you should, because you are definitely at the level where this is required. The better you get, small mistakes take away more and more from the picture as a whole. This is not a small mistake... I must say, i am kinda disappointed. And please understand how hard this is for me to say, because, even though you know that critique is good, to get negative feedback like this hurts, and i don't want to hurt you, but i think i am (just a bit though). Someone has got to do the dirty work you know. So get your shit together and start focusing on joints, you need it. Remember that horse picture? With the background that i won't let go? Well of course you do, but i have seen the speed footage of you drawing, and i think that you too noticed that the back legs didn't look quite right, and so you covered them up with smoke. (genius actually XD) Making things look as though they are in motion is very hard, but, someone has got to do that too, and that is your job. This may have been one of my harshest and meanest comments in a long time, but i think it was worth it, because i think it can make you better, and that is one of the main reasons why i am doing this. Keep on going strong! (and if anyone else has bothered to read this far, i first, thank you for reading, and then say that you need to be extra nice with her in your comments since i am so mean.
)

the trunk is a tree texture with a paintover, not a brush. you could make a tree trunk texture brush.. and i haven't used the golden ratio because this composition is based on the rule of thirds. (the background tree on the left is placed on one of the grid lines and the wolf is touching one of the other gridlines with his hip) i did plan to have some animals in there.. but i decided not to, for reasons i don't remember. i do see your point, i probably should have added the animals.
well this is my OC Glass, and she isn't really a wolf or a dog or a fox (uhuhuu just canine, because i like animals with long faces) I rarely plan out my drawings like that as they tend to get very stiff. i prefer a looser way. Of course here i had a bad phone picture of my sketch and i realized just recently i had linearted it really weird. i basically linearted the left foot as the right and the right as the left.. woops! that might explain a bit of the join thing <-< i usually do anatomy studies beforehand, but here i didn't, as it was in my sketchbook and the legs looked different. they were shorter and stuff. and nah, i won't start adding the joints because really, it stiffens the drawing up _a lot_. and even tho this one is fairly stiff, it would probably have been stiffer if i had used joints. i prooobably should have done some anatomying, and looked at the sketch (woopsies) but oh well.
naah, don't worry about being mean as i pretty much just run over your comment with a buldoozer and pick out the stuff i think makes sense (aaaughh i don't like drawing up the joints, stiffy stiff stiff. i've tried the lightning technique, which is pretty cool, and i do a version of the jointy thing, but not like that. ugh >3< i have a vendetta against websites like that. step by steps are horrible horrible tutorials. ppl should focus on anatomy (right saix. get your ass over to that book you probably have on canine anatomy)
