Happy Thorsday – Eikthynir, Who Stands on Valhalla
Happy Thorsday! - Here’s another 20 min sketch of a Norse (and Germanic, Celtic) mythological characters. This week it’s Eikþyrnir / Eithynir / Eikthrnir. One of the Stags / Harts that endlessly walk and graze on the branches of Yggdrasill. Mentioned in the Grímnismál, in the Prose Edda.
Known as the one with the Oak antlers. His name possibly indicates him along with his goat companion Heiðrún as mix of earthly and heavenly. This some have proposed is being due to similarities of their first names, and that theycan be translated as Bright Sky for the first part of their names, and thorns / branches for the second part.
He and Heiðrún stand on the roof of Odin’s Valhall eating the branches and leaves of the Lærad / Lærað / Laerather tree, that’s considered an aspect of Yggdrasil the World Tree.
Eithynir’s diet being so potent shows most in it’s horns. That have grown to mimic oak tree branches. And from which flow a constant stream or pure water that feed many of the rivers of in Asgard, Midgard and Hel. Winding around many of the homes of the gods. They are usually depicted as larger than normal animals. Both being capable of maintaining their balance on the steep roof and flowing water. Considered all the more difficult if considering the roof is often described as being shingled with shields.
Some feel that the other deer that are known to eat at Yggdrasil’s roots Dvalinn, Dáinn, Duneyrr, Duraþrór, are simply later aspects of Eikthynir. Or that at one time they were one hart that became four. But as these other deer wander amongst the branches of the World Tree near it’s source, and not on Valhalla’s roof there’s room for them each to exist separately.
