There are a variety of myths about Medusa, the most common that she was once a beautiful maiden whose hair was her chief glory, but as she dared to vie in beauty with Athena, the goddess deprived her of her charms and changed her beautiful ringlets into hissing serpents. She became a cruel monster of so frightening an aspect that no living thing could behold her without being turned into stone. (Which just goes to show, don't mess with the Goddess of Wisdom)The most intriguing variations to me, however, are the ones which depict Medusa's original beauty as the source of her ability to petrify.

This almost has an underwater quality about it, with the hair floating around her face echoed in her raised arms. And the colour scheme, of course: gorgeous. I like the way you've made her facial expression subtle, when this is a medium where subtlety is easily lost. *worships*

Absolutely gorgeous. I love the hair -- not snaky at all in itself, so you get a real picture of Medusa's human beauty, but foreshadowing snakiness in the way the separate strands stream out in all directions. Lovely.
