Based by 90s toys originally in the UK, Mighty Max is the good "underrated" animated series from the 1990s, considered 40 episodes with 2 seasons made between 1993 and 1994, which tells that the preteen hero, Max generally take a cosmic-dimensional cap for going anywhere, with presenting to help his two different-kind mature allies: Virgil the birdlike humanoid and Norman the strong bodyguard, before discovering and defeating the dangerous creatures or mythologies (mainly the main one in the final step: Skullmaster) for saving the world.

Like I showing the plot, that series concept look like a fanservice, like almost every toys-based cartoons (like My Little Pony, He-Man, M.A.S.K., G.I. Joe and many more) generally known from the 1980s,...
But happily it tells well the story which incluses the history of mythology, the world education (mainly the morals in the end of episodes) and mainly the origin of the main characters and original Mighty Max who existed a very longtime. The characters are not just comedy or fun only that children imaginated with their toys in that period, but they are correctly mature, serious and intelligent with different level of characters. Max isn't always a dumb character either, instead of Goku from Dragon Ball or Ash Ketchum from Pokémon who are fun that any fans think they are funny for children, but he's seriously understood the logic after the history and the geometry for succeeding his goal... And he's cool that I agree with you that you think the concept art, but it's not a cliché. The secondary characters are good exclusive, the animation is great mature with a full-black shadow, the music is pretty fatal (with rock n' roll and metal kinds), the developement is good work and surely better than original toys that I understand every senses about the show which is truly a good series of the franchise.

I recommanded you watching the 90s series, if you're curious to be good like adults... And the theme song is pretty awesome.
