There is a species that feeds upon the flesh of unwary villagers and lives hidden in the shadowy depths of vast melon beds.

For a long time humans got the notion that melons where fruits. however, recent observations brought to light that melons are actualy eggs waiting to be hatched...
The word melon derives from the ancient greek word "mellon" (μέλλον ) which means "future" and it was a common belief that those creatures hold the key to the future.

Wow, that's scary. And really predator-ish. Reminds me of velociraptors from Jurassic Park. And the human features make it even more frightening.
