I woke up feeling my arm tingling. The sun’s rays were pouring in from the window, and it warmed my skin. I decided to get up and get to work, so not to give the master the idea that I was taking advantage of his hospitality. I made my way over to the bathroom to wash up, but when I looked in the mirror, I had realized that the bruise on my face had disappeared.
“How?!” I exclaimed as I touched my face. “Impossible! I was bleeding, how could this happen?!”
Then I thought about the tingling in my arm. I decided to remove the bandages; the sight was terrifying. I was completely healed.
“What’s happening to me?” I questioned myself.
A knock came to my door and I gasped.
“Christine,” I heard Mei Rin, “may I come in?”
“Uh, just-just a second, I’m not decent,” I called.
I quickly grabbed a long-sleeved maid outfit and slipped it on. I made my way quickly to the door and greeted Mei Rin.
“Good morning Mei Rin,” I said.
“Good mornin’. Sebastian asked me to bring some tea for you he did.”
I looked down at the tray and saw tea and a biscuit breakfast. This brought a smile to my face.
“Hey!” she exclaimed. “You’re face! It’s healed!” she yelled as she examined me.
“Uh, uh yes it is!” I gulped. “Sebastian did a good job in treating it heh-heh.” *Please believe it…*
“Wow, Sebastian did dat?! He’s amazing yes he is!”
“Yes, he truly is,” I smiled.
I took the tray from her and set it down on a small table and took a bite of the sandwich. It was delicious. The tea was just a normal black tea, but it hit the spot.
“Thank you Mei Rin,” I smiled.
“You’re welcome,” she said. “I need to go do some chores, I’ll see you later.”
I waved in her direction. I finished my sandwich and went to go do my chores. Today I had to scrub the hall windows and dust the furniture. I went outside to get a bucket and noticed Finny doing some gardening and smiling at a bird. He always had a smile on his face, I liked that. I found a rag, went into the mail hall, and began scrubbing the windows, not missing any spots or crevices. I’m not sure how long I was there, but I was almost finished with the hall when Sebastian came my way.
“Christine,” he caught my attention. “You were supposed to be resting.”
“I’m doing fine Sebastian really,” I said quickly while trying to hide a blush.
“I can see that. You nearly cleaned all of the windows perfectly. How is your arm doing?”
“Uh, my arm is fine, thank you Sebastian,” I said quickly with a smile.
I didn’t know that he came close to me and started to examine my arm. His touch was gentle and warm; before I got too into it, I pulled away.
“What are you doing?” I questioned.
“You seemed to nearly heal entirely. No pain, wincing or even bleeding. That’s impressive.”
“Well, I had the help of a skilled butler aid me, and I suppose I’m just a quick healer,” I joked trying to change the subject.
“Or something more,” he said.
“What?”
“Finish with the windows and meet me in the study. There is something that I must talk to you about, if that’s alright.”
I gulped, “Yes, sir. I shall be there.”
“Good,” he smiled.
I turned around and started back up on my cleaning.
*I wonder what he wants to talk about? Am I in trouble? I don’t want to lose this job, I like it here.*
I ignored the feeling of worry and continued doing my work. When I was finished I took the bucket out, dumped the water, and drained the rag. I went to wash my hands and then I made my way to the study as Sebastian asked of me. I opened the door then stepped in and saw him working on some books. When the door opened he glanced in my direction and motioned for me to come in. I did and shut the door behind me.
“Thank you for coming,” he said. “Please have a seat.”
“Alright,” I said and took a seat in a chair.
“I need to ask you some questions and I want you to answer them honestly. Can I trust that you will tell me the whole truth?”
I nodded, “Yes sir, I have no reason to lie to you.”
“Very well. When were you born?”
“I was born on October 31st 1862, to my mother Marina Adams.”
“And your father?”
“I never knew him. He abandoned my mother and I when I was very young.”
“I’m sorry to hear that,” he said. “Where is your mother now?”
“Dead, she died from the flu about five years ago.”
It almost brought a tear to my eye to mention my mother’s death, but I held it in to save my dignity.
“Now let’s get down to the part where you healed entirely. Last night I wrapped your wounds, I’m not sure why they healed overnight, but I have a hunch.”
I gulped and got a little afraid. “I’m not really sure myself. I woke up this morning and realized that my wounds were gone. I honestly don’t know Sebastian.”
“You have incredible strength, never flaw in your duties, and rapid healing abilities. Also you have a power that no regular human has.”
“Excuse me?”
“You are not human Christine,” Sebastian said while approaching me. “You’re different, just like me.”
Sebastian’s eyes were glowing a bright red; just like mine had done this morning. I was surprised, but I wasn’t afraid. His face approached mine until he was near my ear.
“You’re a demon, and so am I,” he whispered in my ear.
My eyes widened in shock. A demon?! How?!
“It cannot be,” I whispered. “I’m a God fearing woman! I have never made any deals or anything of the matter. I’m just a servant, who can do her tasks efficiently. I’m not an evil person!”
“Christine, calm down,” Sebastian said while putting his hands on my shoulders. “I never said that you were evil. You are far from that, I’m just revealing a truth that you could have never known. You never knew because it leads back to your father, because your mother wouldn’t have died from a small illness if she was a demon.”
“Is there a way to become fully human?” I asked.
“I’m afraid there isn’t,” he answered. “All you can do is accept what you are.”
A small tear fell down my cheek; will I never know what it’s like to be in God’s grace? Will I never see my mother smiling up in heaven? Never to know the true beauty of paradise? This is sudden, shocking even, but why did I only shed one tear and not more? It’s as if, I’m not afraid.
“So, I’m a demon….are there different kinds?” Why was I asking this?!
“Yes there are. However, I’m not quite sure what you are yet. It has to go back to your father’s origin. Were you ever interested in locating and meeting your father?”
*Did I ever want to meet the man? He only abandoned me and my mother, and I always wanted to know why.* “There have been instances, when I did want to meet him.”
“Then it shall be done. I will locate your father and we will get to the bottom of it,” he declared.
“Sebastian?!” I exclaimed. “How is that possible? Is there like a demon meeting hall or something?”
Sebastian chuckled at my response as he grazed my cheek with the back of his gloved fingers.
“You are quite amusing Christine. Unfortunately no, there’s nothing of the sort. We demons tend to be loners, unless we find someone-,” he paused himself. “It doesn’t matter; but as you are one hell of a maid, I am simply one hell of a butler. I shall find your father and you will get your answers.”
I had an urge to hug him. He was being so nice to me and I couldn’t help but want to give him something in return. Without warning, I pounced at Sebastian and hugged him close to me. I think he was a little taken aback by my sudden reaction, but soon I felt two arms envelope my waist and pull me in tighter returning the slight affection.
*~Sebastian’s POV~*
Christine’s hugging me?! I’ve never had any person, human or demon, come into contact with me without me initiating it. But the closeness, and the warmth, it was comforting. I couldn’t help but wrap my arms around her, and bring her in close to me. Her scent was absolutely intoxicating, her body fit perfectly with mine, I couldn’t help myself. I finally found her, I have found my destined. No one could make me react this way, no one but her.
I wanted nothing more than to keep her there and make her mine, confess everything, and claim my bride. However, now was not the time. I must let her adjust to the new information and discover what type of demon she is. It’s what she wants, and I must fulfill her every wish. I would do anything for my bride, my Christine.
“Thank you,” she whispered. “I appreciate everything you have done for me thus far, Sebastian.”
*I’d do anything for you,* I thought. “You’re welcome. If you need anything, please don’t hesitate to call me.”
“I will,” she replied.
*~Christine’s POV~*
I slowly, but regrettably, backed away from Sebastian while trying to hide a blush. It must’ve been embarrassing for a girl to just lunge and hug him so quickly, especially one who’s practically a stranger. I couldn’t stop myself, I felt indebted to the man before me. I cleared my throat and looked to him.
“Well, I should continue with my chores. I will start preparing dinner shortly. If you need anything, just call or have one of the others come get me,” I smiled.
Sebastian looked as if he wanted to say something important, but he backed off and nodded his head.
“I shall inform you if anything changes.”
I turned and walked out of the study and returned to my duties. I dusted the library, mopped the main entrance, and cleaned the marble outside the estate. Nothing but perfection, as my mother always taught me.
As I was cleaning, I kept thinking about what Sebastian said about finding my father. Could he actually do it? I didn’t even know what my father looked like or his name. Mother never really spoke about him, other than he left and she would never share the reason with me. Maybe it was because he was a demon, and she knew about it, or he never disclosed it. There were times, times where I would ask where my father was; and times where I needed a father. Sometimes I think that if I had him in my life, maybe he would’ve helped me get away from the servant life, or just stop people from abusing us.
With all this going through my head, I hadn’t realized that I had made it into the kitchen and prepared a chocolate cheesecake for the young master and set it upon a tray ready for delivery. I placed chai tea on the tray as well. After that was prepared, I worked on dinner for the young master. Sebastian had entered and greeted me.
“Good evening Christine, how are you?”
“I’m doing well, thank you. How are you Sebastian?”
“Quite fine thank you. The master’s snack is already finished?”
“Yes, I prepared it myself. He can have an appetizer before dinner is prepared.”
Picking up the tray he looked to me, “What’s the menu for tonight?”
“Beef stew, if that’s alright with you Sebastian?” I asked and looked in his direction.
He smiled at me, “Yes that sounds delightful; I shall inform the young master. I will return momentarily.”
I just smiled at him, and continued on working on dinner. Bard came in and assisted me with cutting the beef into cubes, while I chopped the vegetables. I used stock and made a spicy sauce to add into the broth. Once the broth was done, we added in the vegetables and meat. I lowered the pot to a simmer, and began cleaning up the kitchen. No later, Sebastian returned and asked Bard to leave.
“Why did Bard have to leave?” I asked.
“I have some information for you,” he said. “I have located your father, and he is living at an estate in London.”
I dropped the bowl that I was drying. Before it could crash against the floor, a gloved hand reached out and caught it. I mentally scolded myself for the clumsiness.
“Forgive me I—”
“That’s quite alright,” he spoke and placed the bowl in the correct cabinet.
“How, how could you have found him so fast?! That’s impossible, you don’t even know who he is, or where to look? You’ve never even met my mother or known where she’s bee-”
Sebastian stopped me by putting a finger to my lips to shush my outburst.
“You forget Christine, I’m simply one hell of a butler. If you would like to meet him, I’ll take you tonight, after I serve the young master his dinner.”
My heart was beating rapidly, and I was in utter shock. Sebastian had found him…the man that made me…this. This was all happening so fast, how could I handle this? But I think that I deserve answers. I nodded my head then Sebastian removed his finger.
“I, want to go. I want to go seen him,” I whispered.
“Alright,” he nodded, “I shall take you tonight. I’ll order the carriage.”
I nodded again and watched Sebastian leave. Trying to catch my breath, I returned to cooking, to try and clear my anxiety. The stew was cooking evenly and the beef became so tender, it would melt in your mouth. About an hour went by and it was time to serve. I turned off the stove, and then I ladled a bowl for the young master. I placed it on a tray with a fresh made bun and waited for Sebastian to return for the tray. As that thought went by, he appeared on time as usual. As he loaded the tray onto the cart, he looked at me while I made sure that the stove was off. Footsteps came my direction, but I didn’t look.
“Christine,” he spoke my name in a low tone.
I looked up at him, and saw something in his eyes. I couldn’t tell if it was concern, or pity. In a quick motion, he produced a white rose in his hand. He smiled and handed it to me. This white rose, my favorite, brought a smile to my face.
“There,” he said, “a beautiful smile is what suits you. Not a frown.”
I smelled the flower, and looked up at him trying to hide a blush. “Thank you Sebastian. I don’t know how to repay you.”
“Do not worry,” he said. “I should take this to the young master. After that we shall depart; he understands where we are going and the others will watch the estate.”
“I understand,” I said and watched him leave.
This is strange; how is it that Sebastian was able to influence me so. If he made orders I would follow them, and whatever he says makes my heart beat quick. Those eyes of his are so captivating I just want to melt in his gaze. I should stop thinking about him like that; he probably has this effect on every woman he meets. Sebastian just has this effect that makes you want to know more. Time went by and I cleaned up the kitchen making it spotless. Soon after that Sebastian returned with a long coat on and black gloves. He saw me and chuckled.
“What is it sir?” I asked.
“You have a little scuff on your cheek. You don’t want to go and meet your father with that on your face, do you?”
I went to look for a rag but before I could take a step, Sebastian took my hand and pulled me to him. He grabbed a handkerchief from his pocket and wiped the scuff from my face. When he finished he touched the rose that I had put in my hair and smiled.
“Beautiful,” he said.
Blushing, I looked down. “I-I should go change out of this outfit. I shan’t be long.”
“There is a dress for you to wear on your bed. I placed it there for you,” he mentioned.
“Thank you.”
I smiled in his direction and went towards the exit and to my room. When I opened the door, I saw a beautiful black and white dress on the bed.
Even though the dress was beautiful, I had a slight thought, were we attending a funeral? But regardless, I wanted to look nice for this meeting. It took about ten minutes to put the dress on, pinned my hair up, and placed the rose on top, acting as a pin. When I looked decent, I exited the room and made my way to the main hall. I saw Bard, Mei Rin, and Finny talking with Sebastian. I assumed that he was giving them orders. When I came into view, they all smiled at me as I descended the staircase.
“Wow, you look really pretty,” Finny complimented.
I chuckled in response, “Thank you Finny.”
“Yea, ya look real nice,” Bard added.
“Sebastian picked out a nice dress he did,” Mei Rin followed.
“Well we must go now,” Sebastian interrupted and came behind me with a coat that covered down to my waist. “I trust that you three can take care of the estate while we’re gone?”
“Yes sir!” they all saluted in unison.
We left the mansion and made our way to the carriage. After assisting me into the carriage then taking his place in front of me the carriage started to move. I was getting more and more anxious as we kept getting closer to our destination. I was twiddling my fingers around so to cope with my anxiety. There was a hand that was placed on top of mine.
“Are you getting anxious?” Sebastian asked as if he could read my mind.
“I’m not really sure what I feel right now,” I admitted. “I’ve never met the man, and you find him almost instantaneously. And now that I kind of understand what I might be, why I’ve always seemed so different than others, I’m almost not sure if I want to know about it anymore.”
Swiftly, Sebastian switched from his seat across from me to the one next to me without letting go of my hand. Suddenly, he gently tugged my hand to him and he wrapped an arm around my shoulders.
“You shall be alright. I’ll be here if anything goes wrong. He will not bring harm to you.”
His comfort was bringing down my anxiety for a while, until after about another half-hour when we approached a white mansion.
*Does my father own this?* I thought to myself.
Sebastian assisted me out of the carriage as if I was nobility and when a servant at the gate asked us who we were, Sebastian intervened before I could say anything.
“We are here on business with Dr. Jackson.”
*Doctor?!*
The servant opened the gate, and Sebastian offered me his arm as to escort me. I felt that if I held onto him, I wouldn’t collapse from the stress overwhelming my body. We made our way up the driveway and through the doors of the large estate. A servant there escorted us to a room where Dr. Jackson was to be. After the servant announced our arrival, he left, and Sebastian and I entered the room. There stood a tall man, facing out the window.
He turned to face us, and I felt as if I was looking at my twin. His purple eyes, well eye because half of his hair was covering his left eye, were just the same as mine. But his look was solemn; like something was missing. When he turned to me his eyes widened.
“Marina?” he mustered.
“Excuse me,” I said questioningly because I was at a loss for words.
“Please forgive my outburst, you just reminded me of someone I knew. How may I help you?”
“You are Dr. James Jackson, yes?” Sebastian asked.
“Yes, has my master been expecting you?” he asked.
I couldn’t say anything, so Sebastian spoke for me.
“I am Sebastian Michaelis of the Phantomhive estate. Your master has been informed of our arrival, but we have business with you. You are a doctor after all. This young woman has a condition that may need a diagnosis.”
“Of course,” the doctor averted his eyes, “please have a seat.”
I walked over to a chair and waited for the man to approach. When he came closer, I got a better look at him. The doctor didn’t look like he aged at all, maybe even the same age as Sebastian. But I had to remember that this man wasn’t an ordinary man. He was a demon. I didn’t doubt Sebastian’s research, I trusted him. When he came over with a light he told me to look straight at him; something I was already doing. He seemed nervous.
“What are your symptoms, miss?” he asked waiting for me to give him my name.
“Christine,” I said. “And, um my symptoms are…”
I glanced to Sebastian wondering what I should say or how to explain my presence here. As always, Sebastian delivered.
“Christine’s blood pressure rises periodically in times of distress, her strength increases, and blacks out after a fit.”
“Symptoms of a hyperactivity disorder,” he explained while feeling my neck with his cold hands.
With my head raised, I saw a small picture on the desk across the way. The picture had a woman in it with short brown hair and brown eyes wearing a day dress…my mother.
I couldn’t just ask straight out who he was or why he has that picutre. I had to do this slowly. “Who is Marina?” I asked.
The doctor halted, but tried to answer.
“Just a friend from years ago. You reminded me of her.”
“If it’s not too much sir, was she a maid here in this estate?” I asked.
“No, she and I worked at another estate. I left years ago and never saw her after that,” he said the last part in a low tone.
“Is that her?” I asked pointing to the picture.
He sighed a bit. “Yes that is her. Though, I’m not sure where she is now.”
“Dr. Jackson,” Sebastian intervened. “I think you know where this is going, and why we are here.”
“Excuse me?” the doctor questioned.
“We know what you are, Dr. Jackson. And I believe you know what I am,” Sebastian declared while his eyes gleamed in the moonlight.
Dr. Jackson glared and shown his own glowing eyes.
“Why are you here?” he demanded.
“It’s not my reason to be here, it’s Christine’s.”
Dr. Jackson glared at me, and I backed away in fear for a moment.
“Why are you here?” he asked again towards me.
“I-I wanted…to meet…you,” I stuttered.
“Why?!” he demanded.
“Marina…Marina Adams,” I said.
“What about her?!” he yelled.
I stood up this time and faced him. And as bravely as I could, I explained.
“Twenty-four years ago you worked with a woman named Marina Adams. I am Christine Adams, Marina Adams’ daughter. I am twenty-three years old.”
“W-What?” he questioned.
“I came here, to meet you…Father.”
