As far as I know, there are different kinds of ... let's call them Layouters. There are people who have one or several larger blobs of mass from which they sculpt details. I am not one of those.
When I do the basic layout of a shape, I try to have a separate object for every detail (where it makes sense, of course). This gives me both a greater liberty to figure out what exactly I am trying to achieve, as well as the option to f*ck up without feeling like I have to throw the whole thing in the bin.
Might be a skill issue, but considering what I do is less skill-focused and more precision orientated, I think this is the right approach.
