on fridays i work with elementary students at william paca, their art teacher kinda... left. without much notice.

last week was the first time that i was there all day, and it was kinda crazy. and really intimidating, i definitely prefer working with older kids. but.

the fifth graders were pretty great (they were a group of boys, oddly enough) and i had them do multi-media self portraiture "in a place where they felt comfortable". at the end we shared, and since i'm of the very strong opinion that elementary school art teachers should never show examples before letting the kids start i did a really quick 'portrait' in the 15 minutes before class and shared it with them afterwards.

and this is it.

i had to explain to them that i didn't really come from baltimore and so it was safe for me to be outside in the woods at night. they have no concept of new york besides the city; while i was trying to explain that i was from "way up-state" they kept naming burroughs, and asking where the trees came from.

anyhow, i've become really attached to it, largely 'cause it was done so absent mindedly, and entirely with 'elementary' craft-y supplies.

tempera, construction paper, tissue paper.

(after that the day sorta went down-hill, school wise, anyhow)
