Description
The title of this drawing is "Clanless" because I think that sums up Tenten very well, she is one of the few characters in Naruto without a clan, and puts her in a very unique position of having absolutely no distinguishing characteristics at all besides being a walking arsenal of weaponry at all times. I wanted to give her a costume that deviated from the standard Chinese-style garment... not sure if the netting suit her, but hopefully it at least adds some variety to the Tenten fanart on dA.I can't draw scrolls to save my life.
Background is an edited photo of the Jiaminhu lake in the mountains of Taiwan, taken sometime 2 years ago while we were mountain climbing...

She's my brother's favorite character. Personally I like Shikamaru a little bit more... but I guess this is kind of comparing apples and oranges.

Although, I don't think that Tenten is Clanless, I believe that she is part of the Sarutobi Clan and we just haven't been told yet.

You know what? I am fairly convinced that Tenten is the granddaughter of the Third.
Watch her fight against Temari, listen to the Hokage's words. He speaks as if he knows her as he talks about her fighting style.
Even Neji's attitude seems to back it up, in my opinion. Because although they are on the same team, I don't think he would train with her if he thought she was beneath him. I mean, look how he treats Rock Lee. He wouldn't even fight against him as much as he does if Lee wasn't always initiating it.
And when it was time for Neji to train for the last part of the Chunnin exam, it was her that he went too.
Also look at their sensai. Yes, Gai is one strange dude, but he is a very powerful Jounin, which is emphasized when Itachi, hold on, let me repeat that in case you missed it, Itachi warned his comrades not to underestimate him.
With Neji having unbelievable strength, and being a podige, he needed a Jounin who could actually teach him. And if Tenten is actually the Third's granddaughter, it would make since for her being his student as well.
Also look at the Jounin weapon specialist, Asuma. With Tenten's forte being what it is, why wasn't she assigned under him? Well, the only thing that really makes any sense would be because you can't have a family member placed under you, since Asuma is the Third's son, it may create favoritism.
I mean, just look at Gai and Lee. Now could you imagine if that was actually Gai's son. *Shudders* Scary.

hmmm that would make her related to konohamaru.
and i kinda feel like the 3rd just knos lot about people. if he's the boss of some of that world's most powerful shinobi, it'd make sense to keep tabs on each and every single one of em. including their fighting styles, their weaknesses, etc.
and as for your theory bout how neji rather train w/ her just because she's not "below him," i think itz just because tenten's weapon based attacks would be suited more for counteracting the gentle fist style. that and your average not special ninja makes full use of all his arsenal. neji could be just practicing on pwnin n00bs.
as for the jonin issue, i'm pretty sure you'd have to be crazy powerful to be even assigned that title. i mean, just one more above that is kage status...and i really don't think asuma can be considered a "weapon specialist." not in the same terms as tenten anyways. asuma's more of a "both brains & brawn" kinda guy. thatz why he has both shika & chouji placed under him.
as for which clan she belongs to, Tsu. As in Mu-tsu(mouse) of ranma 1/2. XDXD

Yeah, I read the manga... and I'm not entirely convinced of this theory yet.
As far as I know regarding the Hokage's comments, he has observed most of the new graduating class (there aren't all that many) so it isn't inconceivable that he understands the basics of all the students' fighting styles. I think Neji doesn't train with Rock Lee because his style of fighting simply isn't useful for Neji's training. The fact that he previously considered Lee to be 'below' them may indeed be a factor as well, but something that can't really be argued with is the fact that (one of) his techniques is best suited for deflecting projectiles and as such Tenten is the ideal training partner. Plus he can't hurt her while training like this, while he might accidentally kill Lee.
I think that all of the team leaders are powerful Jonin. Kakashi, Azuma, Gai, Kurenai... each have unique and powerful abilities. I'm not sure how instructors are assigned, but as far as I know they should be all equally competent, though Kakashi's standards may have been higher than most, given how few students he passed.
That said, there's nothing to indicate that your theory is wrong either.

When you say it now it really don`t sound nice xD Well,in my school we don`t have uniforms,but there are a few schools that they are necessary...but they look really silly-lika a pyjamas!!!

I had to wear a uniform for a few months during elementary school in Taiwan. It actually wasn't all that bad... rather convenient actually since you really didn't have to worry about what to wear every day in the morning. But after awhile you started feeling like you were nothing more than a number. Very depressing.

Well I've noticed that their certainly are some distinguishing 'uniforms' that various chuunin-level (or above) ninja have, such as the flak jackets, or the waistband thingies that the NSound village has.

Tenten's character design seems to stray from that of the other ninjas in Naruto as well, what with a distinctly Chinese design making her stand out distinctly from the strong Japanese roots that influence designs of other characters...

Yeah, they say that the reapeats in her name is of Chinese background. Also, her hair- kinda like a panda. I heard that somewhere. Yeah, her technique is kinda different, as well. Like, all ninja tools. It's pretty cool.

I basically mixed and matched for the outfit. In Chinese her name means Sky (twice). As noted in the artist statement, some of the inspiration for the clothing design came from a drawing on Hinata on dA, the link can be found above if you're interested.
The hair style is indeed quite traditionally Chinese...

Well the Chinese language is actually somewhat vague in some situations, the exact meaning of the word must be determined by the context. "Ten" (倩
The essentially meaning is the same in Japanese, as far as I know.

Wow, complicated. I get what you're saying though, the languages of Japanese and Chinese can get really complicated at times. Ten does mean the same thing in Japanese and Chinese, I believe.
I think that when Ten is in the word Tenshi, that is when it means angel. I really don't know all that much about it though.

Yeah, that's an example that I used, though the English spelling differs. Tenshi = 倩使 = Angel. I don't have as much experience with Japanese, but since my family's Taiwanese a have a decent grasp of Mandarin Chinese.
