At prayer?
By the way, I’ve heard a theory that the distinction between how the French government under the old Aristocracy 1627-1789, and the French Government under the New Aristocracy 1804-1873, seems to be what really set the stage between your Civil War.
The way I heard it was this:
The mission and secular trading relationships with Vietnam under the old Aristocracy was “Religionist” but not “Racist”, that is, Catholic French naturally saw their religion as superior, but did not discriminate on the basis of race. Converts were treated as equals, and eventually, as the local Lords’ power was broken, were put in charge of the South as a sort of by proxy co-colony along with the few actual colonists. Southern Buddhists were not directly forced to convert, but were subjected to a regular kind of “soft pogrom” to encourage conversion. The coastal communities were also more cosmopolitan by nature, having been a trading hub for centuries.
However, the missions largely left the north alone simply because it was very difficult to get there and few returned. They were very tough to live in that jungle, to have fought off past invaders of their Northern borders and were FIERCELY proud Buddhists. Trying to establish a mission or regular direct trade there was too much trouble, and were largely left alone.
An equilibrium of sorts developed and Catholic And Buddhist southerners more or less were getting along, albeit divided by class lines.
Then the Revolution left the colony in a kind of limbo for 15 years, until Napoleon reestablished it.
(I have a lot of trouble finding out anything about how Vietnam fared during those 15 years.)
The NEW government, however, was DIFFERENT. They were indifferent about church matters, leaving it alone where it was already established, but did not care to help or fund them in any way, totally unlike the previous government. The Vatican received no official support from Napoleon.
So, the men who came then were all about money, control and EXPANSION.
The dark turning point, however, was when some asshole realized that the Northern jungles would be ideal for Rubber trees. This, combined with the emerging pseudoscience about “race theory” among the fashionable elites in Europe, finally brought the proud Northerners into the fight.
Southerners hated the coldness of “The New French” but had grown fond of, or at least reluctantly dependent upon, the “Old French”, the remnants of which remained influential. But the North had NO such feelings and saw the French IN GENERAL, old and new, as invaders to be repelled, converts as traitors to be slain. Well, Napoleon and his successors would have none of THAT, and effectively came to enslave much of the north as a rubber plantation.
When Ho Chi Minh’s appeal to the opening session of the League of Nations failed, the war was inevitable. Chamberlain was such an ass.
Anyway, that’s the theory I heard, as far as I can remember it, and have yet to hear anyone else talk about it since.
What’s wrong with it, if you don’t mind my asking?
