Do you use half references, half imagination, or, I don't know, are you just pure genius?

I usually use reference (and strongly strongly advocate everyone to use as much as they need) but for this one I actually haven't yet. Everything here is stuff I have painted before.
I think the important thing is to go through lots of different ideas when you are in your preliminary stage... like when I did this project I started out with 3 different ideas. The first idea was to do a city way up in a giant tree, the second idea was to do a city built on a really steep mountain with a bunch of rope bridges going to it and the last one was to do swamp city with these over sized trees where people lived and then used little canoes like gondolas in Venice.
After doing several sketches of each of them I sort of just ignored the ideas I started with until I found something I liked.
