Description
Hana is the eldest of five children (and of four daughters). She is a side character in a story I have not yet written but am in the middle of plotting. As the story opens, she is 19 years old and considering marriage. She is an American, surnamed "Sumisu" (or "Smith"), but she lives in Japan at the same time as the characters in my novel The Tale of the Crane Princess, i.e., 200 years after the Plague that killed 90% of the human population, worldwide. Her family at the time of the Plague were among a group of tourists visiting a hot spring spa in the Iya Valley of Shikoku. After the Plague, the surviving tourists stayed where they were; there was nowhere to go and it would have been dangerous to travel as foreigners outside of the little hot spring town. The surviving locals, on the other hand, took pity on the tourists and took them in, protecting them and their descendants. Her younger sister Saori will play a leading role in what happens 200 years after the Plague when the small town is rediscovered by the Japanese Imperial Defense Forces' Imabari Battalion under Col. Higashikuni Akira.
