Something I was cooking up some years ago, taken in the vein of Eberron and imbuing elementals into appendage replacements. Never fully worked it out so that it wouldn't be overwhelming but I suspected it had to be done by just substituting and messing with the rules of current popular magic items ( like a Gauntlet of Giant Strength) and making the rules take away and put in so that it's different but doesn't upset the game.
