Description
Hi. Glad to see someone reading this. You're probably wondering who I am, of course. My name's Zack Wright. I'm about sixteen years old.
But most people call me Eric Flein. So let's go with that.
Yes, I have a false name. It's more of a codename than a false name, but still.
So I'm basically a gamer. Mostly Pokémon, Kirby, Super Mario... well, anything Nintendo, honestly.
And I just recently got into my first major gaming tournament. It's happening today!
Speaking of which, I should get ready. I don't want to be late.
I whip out my hat and sunglasses, and throw on a backpack. I put my New 3DS XL inside, along with a few amiibo just in case.
I screech to a stop. What am I thinking? I need my helmet on, not my hat! I have a bike to ride!
Oh yeah, did I mention I'm riding a bike the whole way there? Probably not.
So I stick my hat in my backpack, and slap on the helmet and clip it on.
I run out and get on my bike, and I hear my mom call out. "Zack, you sure you don't want to go in the car?"
I call back, in more joy than annoyance. "No, thanks, mom! I'll be safe!" She calls back one more time. "Well, then good luck!"
I then start pedaling my way towards my first big event. Even if I don't win, it's gonna be AWESOME!
Soon, I'm out on the road. It's mostly simple.
I usually stay in the far right lane, since there's no bike lane. But this road's a two-lane. One my way, and one the other. Which led to a number of cars stacked up behind me.
"Sorry!" I shout. I pull as far to the right of the lane as I can to let them pass.
But they start to back off. Weird.
I turn back around and see a semitruck barreling down my side of the road, straight towards me.
I instinctively jerk to the right, forgetting I'm already as far right as I can without falling off the road, down into the trees below.
And I think you know what happens next.
My bike slams into the guardrail. Due to this annoying effect called inertia, I keep moving right and fall over the rail.
Now I'm falling, down into these trees.
I hit the ground, front first, hard.
I get up. My body aches, but I got out of that mostly unharmed.
I dive into my backpack, hoping it's the same story for my 3DS.
But when I pull it out and open it, it's already turned on, and both screens are glowing. Not like they're plain white, but actually GLOWING. Weird.
At least they're not broken.
I shut the system and put it back. Now I might be late.
I take a look around. Strangely, there's no trees for about five feet from where I stand.
Was that me, or was it always like that?
I look upwards. The trees grow a bit thick. But I can barely make out the side of the road.
Along with bright lights and a lot of commotion. Someone must've called the police or an ambulance.
I hear a loud voice from the road. "ARE YOU OKAY, YOUNG MAN?"
I yell back to them. "YEAH, I'M FINE... SOMEHOW."
A second voice, from what I thought was a 10-year-old boy, appears from behind me. "Well, hi. Never expected a visitor to drop in like that."
I turn. "Visitor? I didn't-"
The boy cuts me off. "I know, you didn't come here willingly. You fell off your bike after instinctively moveing away from a semitruck coming straght towards you."
I scrunch an eyebrow. "How did you-"
The boy cuts me off a second time. "To rephrase my earlier comment, I actually HAVE been expecting you. Just come over here, please."
I decide to trust the boy, so I start walking towards that area. "Okay, so you know why I'm here, among whatever else. So you should know that I have a major video game tourney to get to. I don't need a bad reputation."
The boy laughs. "Don't worry. With my help, you'll be there in time. If not a while early."
I continue walking. "So, anyways, who are you?"
The boy chuckles. "Of course. My name is Max."
I turn. "Just Max?"
The boy laughs. "No, the full name's Maximillithan, but you can call me Max."
I chuckle and keep walking. "That is a pretty long name. But nice to meet you. Do you live out here, in this... forest, I guess?"
Max replies quickly. "Well, in a sense, I guess. Come on, just a little further."
Suddenly, the trees part to reveal a decent-sized statue. It seems ancient, but it pictures... a kid with a 3DS XL.
I'm stunned. "Whoa. How did..."
Max chuckles. "Yeah, I know. Ancient statue, mordern device. Kinda counter-intuitive. But it's actually a New model, so it makes it a bit more recent. But you should read the inscription on the statue... preferably aloud."
I chuckle. That reminded me of a book where someone accidentally unleashed a god of chaos by reading the inscription on a statue. But it was fiction, I knew that. So I read the inscription aloud.
"The one who comes to change our worlds for the better, with a power beyond compare."
I felt rumbling. Something was moving.
I'm really hoping I didn't unleash a god of chaos.
I hear Max again. "I could tell you that this wasn't supposed to happen, but I'd rather not. To make it simple: you're the kid on the statue."
I take a step back. "What? But... I don't have 'a power beyond compare'! I barely know how to solve a rational equation!"
Max laughs. "You just have to be rational, silly."
I face-palm. "I meant like the algebra kind of equation..."
Max groans. "Please don't start talking about algebra..."
I chuckle. "Yeah, no. But either way, I'm not this... statue kid."
Max replies literally immediately. "Actually, you are. But you'll still get to go to that tournament."
I scrunch my eyebrow again. But I don't reply.
The statue finally finishes moving, revealing a passage down to some secret bunker. I peek down into it.
And a blue, elliptical portal is on the far side.
After I take a few steps down into the bunker, something small, blue, and fast-moving flies out of it and crashes into me.
I take a second look, and see that a Shiny Mew is clinging to my chest.
"What the?" I say, abnormally calmly.
The Shiny Mew looks at me, and says "Hi. Glad we got to meet face-to-face!"
I gawk. "You... you're Max?" The Shiny Mew nods. "And, for the record, Arceus was the one who gave me the name Maximllithan. Got it?" it says.
I chuckle. "I honestly thought it was just... programming. And code. Not a whole multiverse in itself!"
Max laughs. "The code is more of a password to get in, and open up a window. The only ones who know this are the ones who make the games. But there are... exceptions."
I scrunch my eyebrow for the third time. "Exceptions? Like what?"
Max points to my 3DS. "That. If you brought it into one of our worlds, it could do some amazing things."
I have an "Aha" moment. "So that's the power beyond compare?"
Max nods. "If you know how to use it, it's one of the most useful things you can utilize."
I nod. This is pretty interesting. But there is one weird question I needed to ask.
So I ask it. "Are you talking with telepathy, or are you actually speaking English?"
Max laughs. "Yeah, I'm one of the few Pokémon who can speak your human language."
I grin, but I don't say a word.
Max chuckles. "Well, I did say you'd get to your tourney. I'll get you close to there."
I look up, at the underside of the strangely placed bridge. "What about them?"
Max grins. "Don't worry, I'll make them think you came up safe, and went on your way."
I nod. "But I'll be seeing you again, correct?"
Max nods, too. "At some point, I'm sure. But for now, see you soon."
I chuckle. "Likewise."
And suddenly, I'm on my bike on the way to the tourney. And judging from the sign I saw, I'm only a mile away.
I'll be seeing you soon, Max. I'm sure of that.
