This is a concept painting for a personal project called Absolution. It’s not as refined as my other paintings, but i like the messiness of it. Besides, its concept work, concept work needs to be quick

about the scene: The Eternal Now (church and city-state) believe periods to be women purging their sins from their bodies, but they see it as a reminder of their impurity, so for the duration of their cycles, they are sent to the purging depths. They are not allowed to participate is ritual practice while they’re in the depths.

Judith (they/them) only hours before this moment was married to Brother Gratian, who had requested a wife from the sisterhood on a whim a few days prior. After their wedding, before they could consummate, Gratian realized Judith was on their period or “purging” as he calls it(should mention, anything not my own fiction is based off 13th century Europe). He proceeds to insult them, saying they have no self control, and how this is a great disservice to both him and the Magna Lux (god, or great light). Judith enters their room in the depths, and breaks down. Flying into a rage, ripping their over cloak, and throwing a chamber pot, spilling blood across the floor.

Absolution is about religious abuse, growing up trans in the church, healing from sexual assault, finding autonomy, and aromantisim. Absolution, and Judith holds a lot of my own personal experiences, im using it to cope with all thats happened, and also to write a rage/revenge fantasy, as well as transgender body horror. It’s a lot, and i cant sum it up here. But im excited about this project.
