The tale of the Smilodon family is perhaps the most interesting Prehistoric Park has to offer.

Sabrina, her mate César, and their cubs, Tai and Sable, all live happy lives in the park as a family. But it wasn’t always this way.

Before Tai and Sable, before the park, César and Sabrina were just two folks trying to make their way in the world. In their homeland, 10,000 years ago, Sabrina was a single mom trying to raise her cubs in an increasingly hostile world, and César was simply trying to make a name for himself.

When Nigel found Sabrina, she had already lost one of her cubs and the remaining one wasn’t doing so well. With the disappearance of the Mega Fauna that had dominated the region millions of years prior, the only prey left were fleet-footed animals that were too fast for the bulky saber-tooth cats, who lacked the stamina to keep up.

Unable to catch prey to feed herself, Sabrina wouldn’t have the energy to produce milk, which her cub needed to survive. Without proper nourishment, the cub would succumb to starvation like their sibling, and if she couldn’t find food for herself, Sabrina would soon follow.

Nigel tried his best to save them both, but in the end, only Sabrina could make it as her cub had already passed away.

On the other end, César was a male that had picked up Sabrina’s scent, but had kept his distance. After being tranquilized, César was taken back to the present, where Sabrina was waiting.

Initially, the two seemed standoffish with one another, but one way or another, César managed to score and it wasn’t long before two new little additions to the roster were brought into the world.

The cubs were born healthy, but they wouldn’t be raised by their mother. The stress from when Sabrina had been living in Prehistoric South America had taken such a toll on her body that she had practically become unable to produce milk. Seeing this predicament, Head Vet Susanne stepped in and took up the role of raising the cubs, which the female Smilodon was secretly grateful for.

Some time passed, and following her first solo adventure, Hazel Veran met the Smilodon family personally. Sabrina and the Asian had a sort of love/hate relationship with one another, with the aloof predator taking every opportunity to tease the girl. César is kind of a jerk, but he had learned to act otherwise through thorough discipline by Sabrina, who was the dominant partner in their relationship.

And it worked. Despite being an ass, César does mean well and is willing to put aside his pride for his family. It was these qualities that led Sabrina and César to fall in love, the latter’s empathy helping Sabrina move on from the death of her cubs and start anew.

Of course, it was a while before they truly became a family. For most of their life after Tai and Sable had been placed in Susanne’s care, Sabrina was afraid to truly be a part of her cub’s lives because she believed she wasn’t fit to be a mother after what had happened in the past. Even after she became more involved with them following the park’s second breakout, Sabrina wouldn’t reveal that she and César were Tai and Sable’s real parents until much later, during their stay at Temporary Park.

The reveal was...unorthodox, to say the least. It was a lot to take in, but the twin cubs came to accept Sabrina and César as their mother and father.

It’s an emotional story, really.
