Description
Hailing from the frigid tundra of Felyord to the rural cities of the southlunds, Capran Conscripts are the backbone of the Capran war herd. They come from all walks of life, from lowly university and high school students full of dreams and aspirations, to the sons and daughters of Ministry leaders. For half a century since the Hethrell began to rebuild their civilization, Lucina and the Astral Council have feared the possibility of Hethrell invasion. She wanted to ensure the safety of her people, and what better to protect them than by teaching them how to defend themselves if the worst came to pass? Thus she enacted Caprinaria’s Conscription Protocol. Instead of possessing a large standing military, all Caprans between the ages of eight to thirty years old currently working in non-vital industries are for one month every year required to undergo compulsory military training. The trainees are organized each year into randomly allocated herds of fifty Caprans each, split further into nine to ten smaller fireteams of five or six Caprans. Each herd will all be mentored by a Highbreed, a member of a venerable cast of Caprans specially bred for war. The intent of randomizing these herds is to prevent these would-be soldiers from becoming too emotionally attached to those they fight alongside, and are able to quickly learn to work with a variety of people who replace their casualties rather than suffer the trauma of losing a long-time friend in battle. Thanks to their Herdist nature and ingrained submission to the Highbreeds, Capran soldiers tend to be obedient and motivated as long as they are kept safe, and their training program focuses heavily on how to survive, how to work as a team, and most importantly - how to kill. Killing is not something that comes easily to a Capran. They are peace-loving creatures and it often takes a great deal of training, demonization of the enemy, or shouting from a Highbreed to instill in a young conscript the necessity of taking a life to protect those who fight alongside them.
Conscripts during their training often compete with one another, as well as other Herds, to earn the favor of the Highbreed leading them. The most skilled Conscripts may be awarded the privilege of wielding saddle-mounted weaponry, being offered to join the Stampede Corps, or becoming a part of the herd’s hierarchy. Despite the fierce competition between soldiers, Capran herds are close-knit groups of soldiers who look out for one another provided that it doesn’t put the rest of the herd at risk. However, being Conscripts does have its downsides – they will panic if the Highbreed leading the herd is killed, some of them lack the mental fortitude to be able to handle the trauma of killing, and Conscript herds will flee vital positions or surrender if they are facing insurmountable odds. Despite this, Highbreeds know how far they can push their Conscripts and can inspire them to feats of heroism. A herd already possesses several months of training by the time they enter their first combat, so it is a foolhardy Hethrell indeed who mistakes these brave mares and stallions for easy prey. In addition to this, Capran Conscripts may also be trained in one of several roles.
The Conscript’s armament consists of the Hoofgun – a steam powered foreleg mounted gun that they learn to use from an early age, Frak Grenades which can be thrown short distances with their kinesis to stick to the sides of vehicles, and some may be given saddle-mounted weaponry so the herd can deal with high-threat targets. They are protected by a Mk 2 Armorgel Jacket and helmet, a comfortable uniform and helmet set that features a supple layer of fluid underneaththe fabric that hardens on impact, capable of reducing the impact of incoming shots to minor bruising and abrasions. Some members of a herd are given a spray can of Quicksilver Foam for dealing with minor battlefield injuries.
