The L.222 was born to exploit a legal loophole found in the Treaty that was signed at the end of the Mediterranean war. Due to Italy's defeat, heavy restrictions were placed upon their Military industrial complex by the Soviets. While they could not make any fully-fledged combat aircraft, they were still allowed to produce a certain number of planes. To get around this, Leggiane created and sold the L.222 as a "Ultra-high performance Utility/Trainer" Aircraft. When asked by a military official as to why it needed such powerful engines, Mr Leggiane answered that it was needed just incase a postal service needed to deliver mail quickly across the country. How an answer like this flew under the radar is unknown to this day...
