Description
The first part of a new Science Fiction image series. Each artwork shows a relic or artifact – the origin often unknown – and is accompanied by a short story. Overall a loosely connected story will be told.
“Today is … perhaps I should state the galactic standard date, the day and the year. But it's a day like any other. But not really, because today I'll begin my great journey, perhaps my last one.
Maybe I should begin at the beginning. My name is Blair. My job title is explorer. I know, it's weird what counts as a job nowadays. But that is what I do. I travel across the galaxy and explore things. In most cases it's rather trivial: drift cargo, mineral deposits, rediscovery of half-archeological sites. But sometimes I discover things that were lost for millennia or even longer. That's why I do what I do. The desire to reveal the unknown and discover the mysteries. Now perhaps you think 'Hey, Blair, you can't earn money with that!', but that's where you are wrong. Of course the exact value of a discovery is hard to determine, especially in the beginning, and nobody in their right mind would just hand over a billion credits to a guy. But that's what the Galactic Institute of Exploration, GIE, is for. When people like me make a discovery, the GIE checks what has been found and pays us depending on what it actually is. One can live from that, and not bad I might add.
I guess before I begin my journey I could tell something about some of my discoveries. After all I'm doing this for over thirty years now, so I've seen some things. So, where should I begin? Oh, right, my first discovery! Following things happened …”
