Description
A GREATLY OVERSIMPLIFIED (EVEN BY GREY STANDARDS) EXPLANATION OF WHAT THESE BEINGS ARE, ROUGHLYThe perception range is essentially infinite in scope, and has as many "directions" or "dimensions" to travel or measure by as it does zones. The grey zone, where we live, is a type of zone that consists mostly of homogeneous void-concept along with a scattered variety of floating rocks and dust-orbs whose substance is sustained by vast, inert, stillborn paraphysical entities (aka the physical forces and fields that humans are familiar with), and contains a variety of other (nonhuman), inert concepts in various concentrations, though it is notoriously unreceptive to conceptual integration and exospinal attuning, so most concepts that branchinate properly there end up inert and nonperceptive. Every given "concept" or "entity" (though the lines of where one concept ends and another begins are so blurry as to be truthfully nonexistent) has an infinite number of manifestations across an infinite (and infinitely divisible and multidimensional) landscape of "zones" and "layers". What this means in regards to the Grey, is that, for example, each organ, tissue etc. of your own body is a sophont being which lives in its own zone, in another world, somewhere else infinitely near and yet distanced. This is also true for all the cells, proteins and complex molecules of other sorts (and so on) that make up your organs and tissues, so it is for individual atoms, particles, and everything else that can be defined as a separate thing from other things. Of course, there are an infinitely greater infinity of concepts and entities that the grey has never encountered (and in many cases never 'will' or could), and each of these has an infinite number of branches, manifestations, layers and zones to inhabit as well. Here are a few perceptoids of a varying degree of abstraction and dilution. Some are pure manifestoids, others are emergents (i.e. they evolved, basically), others are conscious subroutines of other entities, some are ramblers or shamblers, and some are something in between. Most of them are probably not found in the grey in any form, but some are, in a completely different, most likely inert form. Also, one of them is just a caricature of a grey zoner. Guess which one it is. Though this is greatly simplified and does not due justice to the sheer complexity and nuance and infinite variations of being and existence and state that exist within the Perception range, I hope this gives you a decent idea of what's going on here. For any questions you have I will gladly answer to the best of my ability.
Note that, while this is my explanation, these ideas are not mine: I pieced them together from concepts elucidated by Bogleech (Jonathan Wocjik) in his webcomic Awful Hospital and other related materials. It's a long read, and somewhat difficult to follow, but if you want to develop your own understanding of this setting in greater detail, that's the best way. I'd recommend reading Borfladge Dorcorm first, though, and then playing Don't Get Spooked, which are two other things, one of them a weird alternative-reality website (just search for it), the other a interactive "CYOA" twine game (again, look it up), both created by the same author, Jonathan Wocjik, to get a better idea of the diversity and weirdness of the setting, as it takes a while to get a real idea from just reading the webcomic first.
