Funny thing is, the quality of the series is top notch.
Sometimes things aren't all that bad all on their own. Recolourings and lazy character designs are two examples of that.
And as for the whole "Oh look, Key just came out with another tearjerker," that's like criticizing Roland Emmerich for producing ANOTHER high octane action movie. Sure, it might not necessarily be "art," but there are people who want to see 'em and that's really all that matters.
Man, you would have hated the old days, when things were either "tragedy" or "comedy" and you kinda knew which one the play was by the first scene or so.

hmmm thats kinda a stretch for me. i think that haruhi and eva characters you are talking about follow the same character types and tropes but are really not realated to each other or based on each other. also the stories are too diffrent to say that one is a dervative of the other. but thats just my opnion

The SOS Brigade is more a gang of friends screwing around, not a military organization like the SSS.
I see more Eva in Haruhi than I do Haruhi in Angel Beats. All you got is ONE character that's a recolour and the rest are, as you said, archetypes and tropes.
