Description
The Republic of Arrayan was founded on October 12, 1979, when it launched a war of independence against Argentina. A longtime province in the northwest of Argentina, the Rio Avellana to the east and Lago Yecora to the west provide the economic lifeblood of the republic. The Arrayan Lowlands are responsible for the nation's largest exports, which are soybeans, corn, and stevia. The Yecora Highland, meanwhile, provides Arrayan beef products as well as salt and peppers. Important industrial centers like Cordoba and Echevarria, meanwhile, offer industrial products, including iron ore, computer parts, and more. Most Arraya are Catholics, although there is a sizable Protestant population. The nation has a population of 2.7 million people.
The Arraya people are distantly related to the Inca and have lived in the area around the Yecora for many generations. During the initial contact between the Arrayan and Spanish settlers, tensions existed. Over the following centuries, the Arrayan and Spanish settlers intermarried, eventually creating a unified Arraya people with both native and settler characteristics. On June 2, 1810, the Hermosa Declaration was signed. This created the Arraya State, the first independent government of Arrayan. However, over the next seven years, the United Provinces of the Rio de la Plata fought a brutal war to bring the region into the fold. Succeeding it was the Province of Arrayan, which remained under Argentine rule for another one hundred and sixty-two years. Due to its isolation and difficulty reaching any settlements outside of Hermosa, the people of Arrayan were largely left alone. However, the National Reorganization Process of 1976 brought this general policy to an end. The Arrayan were labeled by the military junta as potential troublemakers due to their indigenous origin.
On October 12, 1979, after months of meetings in the second city of Cordoba, a group of intellectuals, provincial leaders, businessmen, leftist guerrillas, indigenous leaders, and others declared independence. Hermosa, the provincial capital, was lost to Argentina almost immediately. This left Cordoba the center of government. Florio Giron was chosen as President of Arrayan and led the Arrayan National Congress (Congreso Nacional Arrayan) or CNA. Over the next four years, a brutal war between Arrayan and Argentina was waged along the Rio Avellana. Giron attempted to retake Hermosa but failed. Following the Falklands War, the Argentine junta agreed to peace in the Bogota Accords, which created a demilitarized zone between the two nations. Following the 1983 peace agreement, Arrayan was welcomed by the United Nations.
Over the next twenty-seven years, Florio Giron ruled Arrayan, creating a regime based around what he called "National Democracy" or maintaining traditional Arraya values, while at the same time engaging in market socialism. Although he never used the term "socialist" while he governed, as he wished to avoid the ire of the United States during the 1980s, he was more open about it in his later years. On December 3, 2006, Florio Giron passed away, ending one of Latin America's longest-lasting presidencies. His close friend Cesar Frias succeeded him, but his time was short. The CNA implemented inter-party democracy in 2008 under Agustin Morales. During the 2015 elections, Morales chose to step down after two terms and hoped that Nuria Balan, the granddaughter of Florio Giron, might succeed him. She was defeated at the CNA's nomination by Roman Serano and placed into exile as Ambassador to Ecuador. Serano, however, led the nation into a recession, and in the 2019 elections, Balan returned and won the CNA nomination in the closest battle in the inter-party democratic system. Sworn in on January 1, 2020, Nuria Balan has led Arrayan through the COVID-19 Pandemic, and the 2019-2020 Recession, and reinstituted the Morales-era political reforms. She is likely to run in the November 2023 elections and is all but guaranteed the CNA nomination. Although widely popular, many feel that Balan will all but guarantee the CNA's dominance in the country for the foreseeable future.
Arrayan’s closest allies include Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, and Mexico. The nation is a member of the Organization of American States. Relations have normalized with Argentina, although the demilitarized zone still exists. Some Arrayan nationalists still claim the Department of Hermosa, where the nation’s former capital sits. Today, Arrayan is a popular tourist location for Peruvians, Colombians, Mexicans, and Cubans, with Chinese tourism most popular. Lago Yecora and Hualleca are the largest tourist site in the nation, and the third city of Kheyr seeing significant growth due to this industry.
