Description
Taken during a visit to Yeovilton in March 2006 just a few weeks before the shutting down of the final Fleet Air Arm Sea Harrier Sqn, 801. The decision to axe the Navy Sea Harrier fleet early in 2006 remains one of the most stupid decisions in UK defence, even a decade later. The aircraft was unique, flown by superbly trained and motivated crews who routinely beat the best that NATO and the US could throw at them, were equally capable in the air-to-ground role without advanced guided munitions (and had bested dedicated strike aircraft with free-fall weapons frequently, including one of the final exercises they took part in prior to the axe). Many of the surviving airframes were also relatively new, compared to other fast jets in the UK inventory. Unfortunately the weather during the visit was terrible.Related content

Beautiful shot! The Harrier is a wonder in its own.

Political, Corporate, back-handed, Anti-British, and a total betrayal of all that's British and of what was left of the tattered remains of a once proud Aircraft Industry..
My feeling about this catastrophic and stupid move causing billions of cost (F-35 (that may not work)), when new build Harriers would cost but a fraction to do the same job.. You have to ask, though you'd never get a straight and honest reply, why? Why did they do it..?
My Avatar says it all, No 1 Sqn, home Of the Harrier, RAF Wittering, I lived on there..
And, by the way, never ever stick me within strangling distance of a politician......

Awesome! Shame the RAF ain't flying the Harrier anymore, and I'm surprised the RCAF never had an interest in it.
