Description

You want to change the wallpaper background of your home page on Deviant Art. Okay, the very first thing you’ll want to do is to create a small image, ideally a jpeg no more than about 512 px on a side. This s because the larger the background file, the longer your page will take to load for visitors. Not every one has broadband and not everyone is getting a five bar signal from the cell tower.

You also probably want a color scheme within the background file that is harmonious with a few, some, or all of your artistic compositions. When in doubt, go deep gray monotone, to allow your audience to appreciate your art first, and not be distracted by flashy colors behind your prized work! Pure black sometimes “swallows” your art; it’s a very powerful tone and usually makes your work more colorful than you might like it. White, conversely, makes your art look heavy, as thought it’s supported by something wimpy, such as a napkin from Burger King.

Finally, if you include a design, regardless of how subtle, it should tile seamlessly. The most prominent program that can offset a design and then let you paint into it to remove the seams, is Photoshop. Without really looking, I believe that Inkscape, open source and free, can do the job using steps unique to the program. A fair guideline, for example if your monitor is running 2560 by 1440, a background picture that tiles no more than two repeats helps disguise the reality that your background is not a hug picture but rather a tiling image.

Upload your picture to your Gallery page, and here’s how to take it from there:

    1.     At the right of the page, click the Profile Skins name, or the adorable artist palette icon.

    2.    You’re taken to a box, Change Profile skin. Click the top right rectangular icon, as shown in figure 2. Click the Pencil icon, and you’re off to step three.

    3.    Click replace image as shown in figure 3. The first time I tried this, the button didn’t appear. Sunspots, probably; if your screen doesn’t have this box as shown in this figure, hover your cursor around and/or cancel out and try clicking the Pencil icon once more.

    4.    Most likely, you’ll be scooted over to all your gallery thumbnails. You might need to click Select, at bottom right, twice, before all your thumbnails show, especially if you have a large gallery. The picture you seek is the most recent addition, so it should be the first, top-left thumbnail. Press Select.

    5.    Click Save in the final box displayed. You’re finished; go put some Police on—Bob Marley will do if you can’t find ThePolice on Spotify, turn it up to 11, then to complete the celebration, go to the fridge and get a refreshing non-alcoholic beverage.
