3 reasons:
1) Baird has been my favorite character since he uttered the "party" line from the first game. (Within the first 20 seconds of this video) [link]
2) I figured there wouldn't be much Baird art for the contest this picture was for, and it might help my entry catch a few eyes.
3) He seemed the most uptight and could really use some recess.

Baird is in the asset pack, but it's moot at this point, because it just has to be a character from the "Gears of War Materials", which now means any character created by Epic for the game, and doesn't need to be in the asset pack.
But I have to say I LOVE THIS IMAGE! It made me laugh too, and I've been a vocal defender of it to those who thought the entries had to be "more serious". lol
Not only is this image well done, and completely original, it is also a PERFECT comedic allegory to what goes on inside many players, and what the game is really all about, and that is FUN FUN FUN!!! And a child on a playground, laughing his little butt off as he shoots bullets from on a springy toy? It doesn't get any better than that!
And wallpaper? I don't care who doesn't like it, or how many purists considered it blasphemous to the game - many more will like it. They will find it funny, they will use it as their wallpaper, and they will adapt it as their icon, their avatar. I WOULD.
Yes, if this takes the grand prize, it will make perfect sense to me, because I think it's absolutely brilliant, and perfectly executed.

The best thing is. It isn't blasphemous to the game in any way.
When you play Gears 3 (for those that have played it) there is a particular part in the game that makes this piece fit perfectly. And you are right, it is a perfect comedic allegory. Couldn't have said it better myself, really couldn't.

Berserkers are girls? If they are I didn't know that, but I do have seven sisters, so I can state with some authority that yes, it would make sense if at least some of them are.

I love anything with a well placed over-the-top slant. I thought it was sheer genius on Epic's part to feature Gary Jules' "Mad World" in a trailer. That is a perfect example of going over the top on the tragedy angle. Turning Gears of War into "Gears of Fun" is right along those lines to me.

Gears of War (first game), I do believe in their introduction to the Berserker, Baird states that they are female locusts. Which is right about when the dude freaks, runs out and gets ripped to pieces by the Berserker. Now, I will have to go play it to find out. Bet I could skip to the part. I sorta have a good memory of it because that Berserker in particular would scare. My brother would find it hilarious to hear me squealing as I tried to beat the part without dying or freaking out before getting through it. (I'm a tad squeamish at times. XD)

Yup. Berserkers are female, and I completely forgot that fact when I painted up that picture. I've been reminded of this a number of times. Some of the humor in that piece comes from the alliteration of "Birthday Boy", so I opted to not change it.

Well, I wasn't looking to get you to change it. A pink or purple hat just wouldn't fit anyway. It just occurred to me after staring at the picture for like 20 minutes. XD Was looking at all the detail and just suddenly I noticed, but I couldn't actually remember for certain at the time. Sorry to bring it up! I always get annoyed myself when something has been pointed out to me for the millionth time. Sorry, sorry! I'm still amazed at the detail in it and this Baird piece, OH, and the Carmine piece. They are definitely gorgeous.
