Description "A Smurf Adventure (not) by Peyo"

I have long been a fan of the Smurfs. I have read all the original comic books and saw some episodes of the cartoon (of varying quality).
Yeah, I saw the movie. It's not that great. Let's not talk about it, okay?

Long-time fans of the Smurf comics have wondered about the origins of the Smurfs: They seem mostly genderless and are referred as male simply because it is the "default/generic" gender (this is our society...). The female Smurfs were created magically and do not count.
So where do the Smurfs come from?

I found this website ( [link] ) where a guy tries to give a reasonable explanation:
The Smurfs as we know them are actually "freaks" from another race, where there are Smurfs of both distinct genders.
"Our" Smurfs are born featureless/genderless and thus are sent away to a faraway village to be far away from the original Smurfs who hate them. They are taken care of by Papa Smurf.
When a Smurf is hatless, he is shown as bald, which I consider as a sign of his "difference".

By the way, I found out too late that my cover has similarities with the "La Menace Schtroumpf"'s (The Smurf Menace), where evil clones of the Smurfs attack their village. That story was disappointing and wasted the potential of meeting other hostile Smurfs; here they are just evil magical clones to be disposed off. We mustn't break the status quo for the kiddies! Bah!
But there was an interesting bit: The story did suggest that there might be other real Smurfs out there.

But I digress! Here Grumpy Smurf (the very first Smurf we met in the comic book series) is chained and exposed as a freak to the Original Smurfs!

Why do we have that abomination of the movie instead of something like this? WHY?!?!?!?

Seriously, your choice of composition and angle make this drawing looks epic!

I love the movie. It was adorable, light hearted, and family friendly. That's what the Smurfs were meant to be all about. None of that barbaric negative stuff. We have tons of that in real life and in plenty of movies of that genre. The Smurfs are meant to be cute and light hearted. I prefer they stay that way myself.

That's a "derp" on me.

I was referring to the art style. What I should have said was "Why can't we have a traditional/classical style for the Smurf movie instead of that CGI stuff?"

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ShaneJensenToons In reply to DrunkardHu [2011-11-09 23:03:38 +0000 UTC]

Why not? We have nine seasons of all the traditional style of the Smurfs you could ever want to see. Why not have something different for the feature film? I always wanted to see what a live action Smurf feature would be like since I was little, so this was almost like a dream come true. I was happy with it at least.

You are definitely the greater fan of Smurfs here, I respect what you say here. If you are curious about what I feel about Smurfs the movie, Brad Jones "The Cinema Snob" pretty much said what I feel about that movie in his review. I recommend you not to watch that video. That's all.

With a name like Cinema Snob, that alone tells me I'd best avoid any work by that person. Too many people love to shit on this movie it seems. I wasn't expecting much and was halfway expecting to be disappointed when I went to see it. I was pleasantly surprised. It had such an adorable lovely lighthearted feel to it. Yeah, I'm definitely a huge Smurf fan. Been for about 30 years now since season 1 first premiered in 1981.

Please elaborate on "That barbaric negative stuff" you speak of here.

I think the real question is "Do you actually like the CGI art direction of the Smurf movie?"

>> "Do you actually like the CGI art direction of the Smurf movie?"

Normally I'm not a fan of it, but I think it totally works for the Smurf movie beautifully. As for the barbaric stuff, I meant more along the lines of negative and violent. Chaining up Smurfs and classifying them as freaks just for being different. We have had enough of that nonsense throughout the history of the real world. Why engage MORE of such a thing in the fantasy world where we can do anything and go anywhere? In my fantasy world I love to get away from anything remotely negative. We have enough negativity and hate in the real world. In the fantasy world I love to escape all that. I doubt Peyo ever intended to have his magical creatures have such a sad and negative history. Smurfs were created to be fun lighthearted and family friendly. That's all the way I see it anyway.

Uh-huh. I thought it was bland and just a repeating of "Schtroumpf Vert et Vert Schtroumpf". With less subtlety.

I'm not that lucky. Only six books were published inmmy country. Even though I'm adult, I would be eager to read "Secret of Smurfs". It seems more mature and serious than the comic books. The fact that "our" smurfs are ostracised is similar to what happens to albinos among the humans and animals.
PS. The fact that tha's Grumpy explains a lot.

gaucelm In reply to Jareksobinski [2013-03-02 23:13:55 +0000 UTC]

Nothing wrong with still reading "The Smurfs". Some have good satire about society, such as "The Smurf King", that is still used as an example about a satire of the political system.

Although the latter books were usually mediocre, there are still some good moments.

Yes, I was thinking of something similar to the albinos...

I've got idea for the beginning. A narration about our Smurfs village. How happy this place is and nice. Than a question to the audience-"But is this is the whole story of the Smurfs?". In next pages a Smurf like the ones we know and love is chained and ostacized by many "real" Smurfs.
