Description Here's some better pics of my velociraptor project. It's life sized, 2 meters long, and as anatomically accurate as I could get with a low poly count. You can download the pattern and make your own (if you dare)Β here. Β

MAGNIFICENT!! I'm SO tempted, but I don't know where I'd keep him, sadly...

Awesome, I'm working on it right now. I just started on the neck, and I'm wondering exactly how it secures to the head. I'd prefer to avoid using wire if I can, as I'm not sure how proficient I'd be with it, and it's an extra expense.
If I successfully complete this it'll be the largest papercraft I've ever built, taking away the spot held for 7 years by my custom build of Milagro's paper doll, a.k.a my mannequin Tsuyo.
Prior to her my largest papercraft was a 76cm model of Curse of Dragon from YuGiOh.

There's four rectangles at the back of the skull where the neck attaches.

I think you may have a hard time not using wire. It'll be tough getting the curvature right if you just glue each vertebra one after the other. Hmm maybe it'll still work. Best of luck.

The curvature is a little tight, but I'm more concerned about the back holding the weight of the neck and skull now. Or will it become more sturdy once I build the arms and lower ribs?
I see spikes kinda on the back of my skull so that's where I glued it, and just applied a nice liberal dose of Aleene's to it.

Hay, a neat little trick to secure credit for your work is to 3D-model a floating text signature right into your model before you import it into Pepakura Designer. There are still ways to hack even that out, but none that I can think of that don't require way more work than most thieves are willing to do, being lazy art thieves and all.

If you look inside the cap of my Sunlight Maggot papercraft , you can see an example if you want. When I unfolded the model, I just stuffed all of the loose 3D letters off of the border of the upper left corner of the 2D layout so they wouldn't interfere with the papercraft.

amazing build. i just want to make is that the hands are pronated. in life they would have the palms facing each other. i feel however that you already know and this is for mainly aesthetic reasons. either way, i applaud this.

Can you think of any good way to demonstrate that without altering the structure that's there preferably?
Like should I align the claws perpendicular to the fingers, or should I align the entire hand perpendicular to the radius/ulna?
I might also be able to slightly tweak the angles at the bottoms of the finger joints to make them less curved, but that may require some guess work.

sorry for the late reply. hard for me to say, being that i have yet to build this paper model yet, so i'm uncertain of what could be the limitation or what can be modified.i will say though that if you ware aiming to have the arms of the velociraptor in an anatomically correct position, then you'r going to have to have the entire hand perpendicular to the radius and ulna. theropods in general held their hands in a clapping position rather then having their palms facing downward as seen here. would you like a skeletal reference to help?

I came up with something I think looks about right. I only glued the tops of the finger joints so they're straighter, like the reference you showed him, and I installed the fingers semi-perpendicular to the radius/ulna, with the arrangement curving slightly inward from bottom to top. I'll snap a pic of what I did and post it as a deviation.
I've only got the right arm complete of that piece so far.
The skull, neck and rib sections are also complete and glued together.

Here's what I came up with:

looking good. as for the fingers, is their any way to have them angled downward at roughly 90 degrees? the posturing and position of the arms are near identical to that of birds, albeit more restricted.Β

Not with the way they're built in the model. They weren't designed to even be placed the way I have them.
I'd have to fabricate an extra wrist joint for the first 2 fingers, plus they're glued solidly in position. I'd wreck the arms if I tried to pull them apart, and the hand structure as is is dependent on the radius and ulna for its shape.

I did not know that. I'll have to twist the scaffold around a bit.

I would also say that the skull looks a little too wide. The overall shape is pretty good, but Velociraptors had really, really narrow snouts, like in Jamie Headden's reconstruction here:Β qilong.files.wordpress.com/201…

As for the wings, I could talk for hours about how these things work but here are some general references:
(Scott Hartman's Velociraptor, approximating the maximum extent to which the elbow and wrist could fold):Β 3.bp.blogspot.com/-ub8CMfXEtJw…
(Emily Willoughby's reconstruction of Deinonychus with a theoretical wing-folding posture, which probably would have applied to Velociraptor as well):Β emilywilloughby.com/gallery/pa…
(Fossil of Zhenyianlong, another dromaeosaurid, showing just how ridiculously big the wings on these animals were. It's interesting to note that Zhenyuanlong doesn't seem to have quill knobs, but Velociraptor does, suggesting that Velociraptor's wings may have somehow been even bigger):Β upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia…
upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia…

I don't expect that you'll put giant feathers on a skeleton, but it might help in positioning the arms to know what they were used for and what kinds of structures they would have supported in life.

Overall, the thing looks great!

Good thing I've already thrown this thing away.

yeah. theropods, well, dinosaurs in general couldn't rotate their hands much if at all. their hands are fixed in a clapping position. and since this is a dromaeosaurid, the wrist can bend downward like a bird folding its wing, but restricted to about 90 degrees.
