An amazing shot - I love your use of fisheye in these photos, you really encompass the atmosphere of the crowd...how do you get such good positioning in the gig? I'm assuming you're in the security zone between the crowd and the stage...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

geeewocka In reply to benrobins [2008-11-08 22:37:17 +0000 UTC]

yep 3 song limit infront of the security barricade
I was lucky that a friend lent me this lens for the night!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

benrobins In reply to geeewocka [2008-11-09 10:37:18 +0000 UTC]

3-song limit? I didn't know that was how it worked...I guess that makes sense. I know it's a really crap question that you've probably had to answer a couple of times...but how did you get to the position of being able to do that? What jobs did you go through? This is my idea of heaven...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

geeewocka In reply to benrobins [2008-11-09 11:03:44 +0000 UTC]

yeah thats the industry standard these days....though some enforce 1 song rule, that was the case when I shot Celine Dion & others make you shoot from the mixing desk behind the crowd!

As for me, I started out shooting local shows by contacting the bands through myspace etc, then I joined a volunteer based webzine - [link] & was lucky enough to get a few big shows through them early, eventually built myself a half decent portfolio & send out heaps of emails to photo agencies before getting a response to 2, which still stands at the moment, they already had full-time shooters...so basically I get the shows which aren't commercially viable in the FT'ers eyes - they only earn money if shots sell...being celebrity based, they won't be interested in covering something like Slipknot

benrobins In reply to geeewocka [2008-11-09 23:15:03 +0000 UTC]

Fantastic - I may have to try that with any local/student bands (though in this remote corner of the UK I'm not holding my breath...) - thanks for the advice! That DOES make a lot of sense, I'd never thought about looking up via Myspace...I mean, I have a few connections - my mum owns a bunch of magazines back home in Bath - but even THAT's a dead zone socially!
What's it like when you go to a gig, then? Is there a queue of photographers waiting offstage for the others' 3-song rule to run out?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

geeewocka In reply to benrobins [2008-11-09 23:52:11 +0000 UTC]

Nah everyone is grouped in for the same 3 songs....for this Slipknot show there was about 15 of us....which is mayhem, also results in a lot of people leaving with the same shots as everyone else...that's where a little bit of creativity come in, so you set yourself apart from everyone else

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

benrobins In reply to geeewocka [2008-11-11 02:13:03 +0000 UTC]

As you seem to have done here - I love how different your shots are...and the fact that you seem to be buddies with more or less all of the world's respectable bands is just an unnecessary kick in the teeth to the rest of us That DOES sound like amazing fun, though - the only experience I've had is ducking in and out of crowds in pubs and clubs taking gig shots...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

geeewocka In reply to benrobins [2008-11-11 09:08:20 +0000 UTC]

nah I was only lucky to meet Jim (slipknot) as the promoter escorted us backstage while Machine Head were playing, out in to the car park...which co-incidently was where he was having a smoke at the time - got lucky

as with my Killswitch Engage meet - I went to the venue at 11am to get front of line for girlfriend so she could be on the barricade & there they were walking up the street, had a quick chat before they broke away due to all the other kids spotting them

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

benrobins In reply to geeewocka [2008-11-11 13:16:12 +0000 UTC]

I saw the Killswitch photo - haven't decided if I've forgiven you for that yet - I guess working in that industry, you get a lot of chances like that...more than the average schmuck, anyway. What gigs have you got lined up for yourself now? Or are you allowed to say?

geeewocka In reply to benrobins [2008-11-11 21:36:30 +0000 UTC]

nothing really coming up, all the major events are covered already...I'm just a back up shooter

local act - Kate Miller Heidke & possibly Bloc Party in the next 2 weeks

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

benrobins In reply to geeewocka [2008-11-13 12:07:08 +0000 UTC]

Well, the fact that you're classing Bloc Party as 'nothing big' probably goes to show the experience you've had Is your line of work primarily gig photography?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

geeewocka In reply to benrobins [2008-11-14 00:09:14 +0000 UTC]

I'm not really a fan....so it doesn't get me excited
Pretty much, I've only done 2 premieres so far....so until that fills up a little more I'll just stick to being known as a gig photog

I'd love to do sports - like football/cricket/soccer, but they require 2 bodies, one of them fixed with at least a 400mm f2.8 lens - they start at about $10,000...so no chance of that happening haha

benrobins In reply to geeewocka [2008-11-15 12:21:31 +0000 UTC]

Oy vey...though, if you cheat (as, unfortunately, I have been known to do) and go for an Ebay alternative...I got a good-quality fisheye lens for £30, and I know for a fact they had a range of 500-1000x lenses for about £100 ( [link] 3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1300%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318 )
...I know, there's the whole 'unreliability' schtick with Ebay, but most of my equipment's from there...
