Description [EDIT] Since people have mentioned it ;3 I didn't make the cranes the traditional way, they're made so they flap their wings when you grip the lower front portion and pull the tail, it's just how I prefer to do it. I'm aware that means they don't look 100% like the traditional ones, think of it as another aspect of making the whole thing personal...

In regards to the shot and my school application, it along with four other images on the theme of identity and a write up about them got me an interview though in the end I didn't end up getting a place at LCA, instead as part of my portfolio it helped get me a place on another course I much preferred and will be will be starting in September X3

Thanks so much for all the faves and comments, they're greatly appreciated~
______________

Possibly one of the photos I'm going to be submitting for my application to Leeds College of Art and Design, they requested four photographs on the theme of 'Identity'.
I'm not sure if I've gone a little too abstract with the theme or not, I'll be explaining my thought process behind this shot when I write about it anyway but I wanted to do a more conceptual self portrait of sorts.

We all have many things that make up our identities, different aspects of ourselves and our lives that make us who we are. Each crane is covered on a short passage about myself, one for my beliefs, my history and the people in my life, my interests, my personality, my ambitions and one left blank for the things yet to shape me.

I chose cranes because while it's never been a conscious decision I always have a paper crane on my desk and I wanted to use a series of things that where otherwise identical because identity in a psychological sense stems from the idea of sameness and continuance.

Please feel free to critique this if you have chance, I would really appreciate any and all input. ^^

1000 for a wish, you know.

I make cranes and wish on every one, just in case.

The writing makes them perfect.

Can I say very good luck with your application...Its a beautiful picture...And also, thats interesting, cause Napier Uni (in Edinburgh) also asked for a series of up to 5 pictures on the theme of Identity for the photography and film application..haha. What do you think it is about identity?

I totally love this picture!
I like that it is writing on the planes, it takes the picture to another level, at least in my book. ^^

Although I would have liked thinner strings... :/

hey
i don't think it's TOO abstract, it's a very good concept, and it shows your identity without being a cliche... wich means you are original
Good work!

Love this concept! Gorgeous photo.

I like the writing on the cranes and how one or two is more clear or the center of your focus than the others maybe because sometimes we can only focus on one or two aspects of our lives at one time and everything else just seems a little distant or blurred. I also like the use of the light and dark colours and that light is on top, perhaps rising above the darkness.

It gives me a perspective feeling and it says that you're looking outside the box for ideas but reflecting inward.

Sorry if I'm reading too much here.

Good luck with your submission.

I think it's a really good idea, something unique. Paper cranes are amazing, I tried origami years ago but I never "got" the concept, I guess, and I've always wanted to be able to make them. Have you read Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes? It's a really good book about this Japanese girl dying of leukemia from the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in WWII, and she, with the help of friends and family, attempts to make a thousand paper cranes so her soul can be at peace when she dies or something to that effect. So anyway, good luck in being accepted for that college!

I have a sudden urge to fold cranes and hang them up now.
I really like the simple yet complex feeling this piece gives. I don't really like how the cranes are not completely in focus, but if you have a reason for blurring their edges, then it's awesome.

Its really beautiful! Bokeh in the shot is wonderful! Although its a bit scattered composition wise because your eye isn't drawn particularly to one thing so it goes to the background. Like jaded august's critique said the background kind of overpowers it a bit. I would like to see what it would be with just one crane because he framing seems a bit cramped with them all their.

However I really like your concept of what each crane represents. Although I feel it would have translated better if the blank crane was the focus.

you know aside from the obviousness I actually get a lot more from this...in terms of just identity, from this I can say you have a sense of art...because believe me from a library of like 60 kids only a handful could figure out how to make a paper crane. But you can also look at the cranes as you've travelled through life and you are flying towards the future. Then of course there is the obvious identifying thing "she likes japanese stuff" XD because anyone else might have just made some paper airplanes to execute this shot. The lighting also plays a part I think. The fact that the light is from above and not below one can think "Darkness lies below but the light is just over the horizon" one of those optimistic outlooks. Especially since the blank one is layered right on the light we can say "shes flying towards a brighter future.

...but this is just my pov *nod*

to think for as well as I can sit down and break down a photo piece by piece I failed art XD and moreso I can't take a meaningful photo worth shit XD bravo darling!

The fact that the tect into the crane's paper aren't random is such a nice detail~♥

In my humble oppinion it's a great piece for your identity themed application.

Woah, this is amazing! And I absolutely adore the idea. Having 5 cranes about what you've done and who you are, and then the final one for the things yet to come - brilliant! I love the idea for cranes too, especially since it's something you always have on your desk. The lighting is very well done too, just enough so you can see that there are words on the cranes but not enough to actually read them so you have a sense of mystery revolving around them. I also really like the background, it's almost like a city scape that's just out of view.

Ok, done now . But I really did like it. Good job!!

I love the idea and that theres just the one blank one - almost like the 'black sheep.' in someways :]

I recently completed a series of works on the theme of Identity for my own course so know how difficult a topic it can be. I love the direction you're taking it though as I suppose in the end it's such a broad topic that it's open to any interpretation! I ended up, somehow looking at mental disorders such as DID ;

All the best for getting into Leeds! I'm sure you'll have no trouble ^^
