Of course the cast knows that insanity causes you to abstract, but there is a recurring abstraction that reappears to cause havoc called Darkness. Darkness always smiles, and always toys with people. It is not insane, but most is unknown about this Darkness.

The cast has many theories:
It is the first person trapped here and the first person that was abstracted.
It's just a sane abstraction
There was no abstraction until Darkness was created, and they created the ability to abstract somehow

Since Muse usually brings Darkness in to cause chaos, most believe she knows what Darkness is and how it began. She's never told anyone however, not even Kitt.
