Description
The name of the Rhodope Mountains is of Thracian origin. Rhod-ope (Род-oпа) is interpreted as the first name of a river, meaning "rusty/reddish river". Just behind the paper mill plant (smoking chimneys in the middle) is situated the Bessi Hills. They were inhabited by the Thracian tribe Bessi.
