Cerulean's mother is a stripe damsel merfolk that gave up her hearing for a necklace that can turn someone from merfolk to human form and back. Her father is a renowned marine biologist and the owner of an aquarium that the mother works for. They live with their daughter in a landlocked American state. Cerulean has anger management problems common among stripe damselfish kept in captivity, she feels trapped and enclosed on dry land and would much rather go to the ocean. If you don't interact with her too much, her anger problems seem nonexistent, it only shows when she's particularly stressed. She has an obsession with the ocean, but doesn't know much about the technical aspects as she finds her father's explanations to be boring. Her parents tried many ways to entertain her love of water, but they didn't stick. They tried bringing her to their aquarium, but she kept sneaking off and trying to find ways to get into the tanks. They bought her three pet betta fish, all of which she accidentally killed by stressing them out too much. The only one that didn't go wrong was painting and decorating her room to look like the ocean.
Now, Cerulean has graduated from high school and has absolutely zero idea what she wants to do in life. She doesn't want to go to college because she doesn't want to choose a major, and she doesn't want to begin work in the aquarium like her parents. Her only plan is to take a gap year and her mother's necklace, and explore the depths of the ocean she's never gotten to visit before.
